    Gunsmithing Problems w/ custom rifle

Now that I've eaten crow, I agree that it was plugged/filled and the inside of the chamber polished. That second taper in the chamber body pretty much seals the deal for me. I also agree that it wasn't going to fire 50 rounds without a blowout if there was a hole in the chamber. I still can not...

    Gunsmithing Problems w/ custom rifle

Alright, I've got to eat crow on that. Never in a million years would I have expected that to have happened. My bad and I apologize to Turd in the Pool.

    Gunsmithing Problems w/ custom rifle

Again, the picture may be deceiving but it really looks like there is two different tapers on the case body and I still think there is too much bulge in front of the case head.

    Gunsmithing Problems w/ custom rifle

Um, yes, something else could cause this. Think about it! Edit: a hole in the wall of the chamber and there were 50 trouble free rounds fired? Right!

    Gunsmithing Problems w/ custom rifle

No, I bet he doesn't. Granted, there may be, and probably is a mark in the chamber now from this but that wasn't the cause. This has nothing to do with screws touching the bolt or screw holes in the chamber. Either the chamber is out of spec or the brass is. The brass appears bulged way too...

Gunsmithing I'm buying a lathe....prepare for lots of stupid questions....let's get started!

For some people. But me, I'm still in the learning curve, and hope to always be :D

Gunsmithing Help un-dick my chambering method

This is one of the things that has always made me cringe, watching people bounce an expensive DTI over the lands while the lathe is under power. There is no way that can be good for it. In fact, I just had to send my long reach Interapid DTI in for repair because I had it on the magnetic base...

Gunsmithing Help un-dick my chambering method

I prebore to 1.1" to 1.2"+ depending on caliber and the pilot still makes purchase in the bore.

    Gunsmithing Muzzle Brake Thread Size

And on the other hand, I've seen far more choked bores due to over tightened clamp on style brakes than I have from properly timed simple thread on brakes.

    Gunsmithing Muzzle Brake Thread Size

But there's not the same risk of choking the bore with a clamp-on brake?

    Spent cases damaging cerakote

Why do you all even finish your rifles in the first place? Why not let them turn into some rusty POS looking rifle? Is having a finish so shitty that after 100 rounds it's dinging/chipping off cool? Make you feel more manly? Make you feel like your really accomplished something? Personally, I'd...

    Gunsmithing Chambering question

Standard bolt face in short or long action can use the standard counterbore diameter with the mini M16 style extractor. Magnum bolt faces, short or long action require the larger diameter with it. But I knew what you meant :D

    Gunsmithing PTG Bolt Problem

Having a true one-piece bolt/body/handle is absolutely worth it to me. Then again, I've also never had a hassle with them.

    Gunsmithing Chamber out of spec

People still make parts just fine without DROs. I doubt a DRO would save more than a couple minutes to set the shoulder, counterbore and tenon face back a few thousandths.

Gunsmithing Good twist rate for a 18 inch barrel 308?

18.5" long, 11.25" twist and .299 bore kept 175 smks point first at 1500 yards for me.
