Daniel Defense, LMT, BCM, Noveske, etc, etc, all have top of the line firearms as well. $1700 is a lot for a Colt Carbine. Thats coming from someone who has a LE6920 SOCOM and a SOCOM II upper. You can get a complete Colt rifle for much less.

It is mostly up to you command to let you get away with gear and weapons modifications. That said, the Army as a whole frowns upon people going above -10 level if they are not armorers, and -10 level is a very small window of modifications. Trigger guard and grip will most likely be a no go...
Honestly it depends on what kind of AR you bought and what you intend on doing with it. You can spend unlimited amounts of money in the AR aftermarket and end up with crap. If you bought a lower end gun to begin with then I would recommend replacing/reworking existing parts.

I was curious about opinions as well. I'm looking to grab a semi .22lr and was torn between the 597HB or the 10/22... Seems to be hit or miss. More aftermarket support for the 10/22 but it seems like the 597HB will run rings around a 10/22 when you get a good one... Just from what I've gathered...
