Gunsmithing Cutting an 11 degree target crown?

Just recently had my barrel crowned by a friend using the Manson tool. Did a beautiful job. The beauty of this tool is that the pilot does not rotate inside the barrel. The pilot ( or arbor) is inserted into the barrel and then expanded. Nothing moving or rotating inside the barrel. The 3...

    Gem Pro 250?

It's not a bad scale for the money. But it can be a bit less sensitive and slow to respond to trickling. It can also trend to drift a bit but not excessively which is very easy to correct simply by taring it out. It will eat batteries fast maybe a couple of hours or so. Make sure you check out...

Scott Parker Beam Scale or high end digital balance

I would get the FX 120i. I have one. Believe me once you get one you will be very pleased. The advantages to me far out weigh the cost compared to a beam scale. It is very fast and repeatable. Just the speed factor alone is a big plus. No waiting for the beam scale to settle down. Extremely...

    Gunsmithing torque wrench

I have and use Precision Instruments and CDI torque wrenches. I have the dial type gages with a memory pointer. I even bought the "extra precision" model which supposedly is accurate to +/- 2%. I prefer the dial type because hand placement is not critical. Just pull the handle to get a direct...

    Savage Prefits

You may want to consider Lothar Walther. Had one in .243. Very good results.

    Gunsmithing Savage pre-fit chamber depth

Wow, what are the chances. I just (and I mean two days ago) had the same problem. Bought a used Lothar Walther barrel in .223. Had the hardest time trying to headspace it. Finally figured out the same problem, situation. Finally got it headspaced as close as I could. The bolt head rubs very...

223: MDT vs Accurate Mag follow-up

I had bottom metal installed (CDI) in two stocks and purchased a MDT chassis (HS3) for .223. Had the same problem. Rounds would not feed correctly at intermittent times. Same deal they would nose dive into the mag. Changed over to Accurate mags and improved the situation.

    What press/presses are you using?

Forster Co - Ax for full length resizing and odds and ends. Hornady Lock and Load progressive for .223 Service Rifle loads. Lyman small turret press set up for decapping and with a bullet puller for culled cartridges.

    Rifle Scopes Burris XTR II

I'll say the same thing. Tracks very well, good zero stop set up, reticle is decent (a bit too thick for me) but I'm disappointed with the glass.

Quick, someone talk me out of a Giraud trimmer

Once you purchase and use a Giraud trimmer you'll be hooked. You'll wonder how you ever got along without it. How many Giraud trimmers do you see for sale? If you don't want to go the full boat you may want to consider his Tri Trimmer(?) that you insert into a drill press or hand drill. Check...

    Funnels and You

I have a Xtreme Hardcore funnel for the .223. Don't really care for it. The funnel mouth is much smaller, 1 7/8" vs 2 3/8"" for the Satern. Making it more difficult to pour a charge easily into the funnel opening. The length of the Xtreme funnel opening is also shorter than the Satren also...

    Favorite Concentricity Gauges?

I have both. The Accuracy One and the 21 Century. As stated both tools are very good. But I prefer the Accuracy One. The Accuracy One is easier to set up and has some additional features. But it is very expensive.

Rifle Scopes Magnification Ring Lever - Metal vs. Plastic

I recently purchased a pair of plastic adjustable bands which I use as levers for the magnification power ring. They go by the name of "Break Away" or something very similar to that. Their actually adjustable plastic bands used to secure the fishing reels to the fishing rod. They cost about...

    Digital scale...

What this gentleman stated. Had the exact same situation. Replaced the Gem Pro 250 with a A&D Fx 120i. You won't be disappointed.

    "New" Giraud Trimmer

Check out the new Giraud trimmer. It is caliber specific but it trims to length and chamfers inside and out. Can be secured in a drill motor or drill press or as he states anything that goes round and round. I think it uses the same carbide cutter as the table top unit. It is adjustable for...

What type of "lock tight" to use

Generally speaking blue Loc Tite is a medium strength " adhesive" which can be removed using hand tools. All though it doesn't hurt to use a penetrating fluid ( I use PB Blaster) when removing any fasteners installed with any brand of " Loc Tite". Red Loc Tite should be considered as a...

    Looking for a shooting mat

It may not be the best or the biggest or the most whatever but I like the 3 section flat folding mat by Creedmoor. I use it for Service Rifle league shooting at my club. It sure is nice to just pick it up and fold it over to carry out at the end of the day. No more rolling the thing up after...

    calipers

Mitutoyo, Model # 505-689. These are dial type calipers with the "more" smoother action. Made in Japan. Purchased them from Enco but I would shop around. Pretty sure they were over a $100.00. Not a bad tool.
