Gunsmithing Need advice from Master Gunsmiths

Nailed it, Rubicon. At this point, I’m more interested in seeing how well I can learn to do it as opposed to doing it quickly. I have no aspirations to do this for a living. I’m just fascinated by the process.

Gunsmithing Need advice from Master Gunsmiths

Tresmon, I understand what you’re saying. I’m looking at this from the point of view of threading, chambering, and crowning at Barrel blank for the first time. At some point, I’d expect to get faster at it, but being a newbie, and wanting it to be as close to perfect as I can make it, I’ll be...

Gunsmithing Need advice from Master Gunsmiths

Thanks Chad. Appreciate the input and I understand the wide gulf that exists between manual machine one-offs and CNC production processes. I also appreciate that shops like yours are able to produce high end results as efficiently as possible. We all benefit from that.

Gunsmithing Need advice from Master Gunsmiths

Haven’t gotten that far yet, Holescreek. My dad buys Douglas barrel blanks and then threads and chambers with PTG reamers and then cuts and crowns the muzzle. Not sure yet on the barrel profile.

Gunsmithing Need advice from Master Gunsmiths

Thanks for the quick response, Rubicon. Part of this, of course is an interest in developing new and valuable skills. My machine room experience has been limited to a few 80% AR projects on the mill so far and I know this is a completely different ballgame.

Gunsmithing Need advice from Master Gunsmiths

I just observed my father, who is very meticulous, but by no means a professional machinist, thread and chamber a .17 Mach IV barrel to fit into a run of the mill Remington 700 action. It took him about 5 hours on his Grizzly lathe but the end result was very nice. He’s done this many times with...

Annealeez... Does the job or AMP that much better?

I’m new to shooting, reloading, and everything there is to learn about both. I plugged my AMP with Aztec Mode in last weekend and was up and running in five minutes. It’s incredibly easy to use.

Anyone know the skinny on 80% lowers ?

I’ve built a few. I found it to be a very enjoyable experience. Even more so since the finished products all perform very nicely. The downside is I could have bought a very nice complete rifle for less than I have in them, but I’d do it again and probably will soon. Most of mine are from 80%...

Terrapin X vs. Geovid HD-B vs. Sig 2400

Thanks Doug. I guess I should probably wait a month to find out, but patience isn’t a strong suit here.

Terrapin X vs. Geovid HD-B vs. Sig 2400

Doug, I have my first rangefinder purchase narrowed down to a sig 2400 or a Leica 2700. Do you see anything coming out next year that would be worth postponing this purchase for due to better price and features?

    Gun ownership by state?

Fake news. When I was getting my concealed carry renewal a few years back, here in Ohio, I asked the deputy how many people in our county have permits. He chuckled and said, “All if them”. 19.8% for Ohio is false.

    For the Constitutional techno geeks....

The problem is, those of us who hold the freedoms given to private citizens in our constitution dear have no common ground upon which to agree with the democrat/rino marxists who are attempting to destroy our republic. They can’t be reasoned with and must simply be defeated.
