    The biggest question here is, did you work up a load or just use what you were using for the smk? I mean, did you do any OCW testing, ladder testing, grouping or just load the same powder charge and seat a 178amax?

    5" difference at 100m? I don't think that's the load. Normally my test loads will span about 5gr of powder and never a change in POI of more than 1" @ 100yds. I really don't see how you could get 5".

    You have to take into account more than just velocity. If you loom at OCW testing at 100 and 200 yds you will see that your POI will change as your charge changes. Your POI may stay the same over 1-1.5gr but then it will move once you go higher. Say you loaded from 41-45gr varget under 178gr...

    You may want to load up to 49gr also. I didn't see any pressure signs up to 49.3gr. Of course, if you see pressure signs b4 that then don't shoot them. That's the highest I loaded and settled on 48.7gr. All this was out of a 20" 700 barrel/1:10 twist. Lots of room in that chamber so pressures...

    I am shooting out of a factory aac-sd barrel. Not a tight chamber by any means that's for sure. That could explain the lower velocities.

    What chronograph are you using? 43gr Varget under 178amax gives me an average of 2423fps through my 20" barrel. Only 2567 through my brothers 26" barrel. All loaded to 2.80" OAL Great loads in both rifles but curious why your mv is so high.

    My main reason for the RL-17 is I couldn't get anymore velocity out of varget with my short barrel w/o compressing my powder. Even after I tried a couple of compressed loads it didn't net enough. I will save the varget for my 178gr amax for 600yds or less. That's a 43gr charge that averages...

    I have noticed the distance issue with many people. Even at 3D shoots where distances only go out to 50-55yds so many people misjudge the distance.
