    M40 orphan is home

This is an on-line archive photo of the first year they were shot at the Army Long Range Championships at Fort Benning in Spring 2004. The USAMU had turned in all M14s and drew the M40s from Anniston (there were not enough M24s to draw from storage). The M40s were converted by the Custom Shop...

Is the FBI holding the greatest shredding party in history??

Technically called "The Prisoner's Dilemma." If nobody snitches everyone gets off or gets what they get. The first guy to roll and make a deal gets the best arrangement while everyone else hangs.

Friend from childhood recently passed. Left me his guns. Need some advice on one.

Such a wonderful testament to a fine friend. See if you can ship it off to Springfield. They should be able to put it into the exact configuration you're looking for with a minimum of fuss.

    Mk 13 Mod 0 stock

Huh. Now that's interesting. When I was in industry several manufacturers had bar-code tags like that on their pressure and precision testing weapons for NATO / .mil ammunition EPVAT testing. Test technicians could do a quick scan to ensure consistency across ammo lots using the same rifle.

What’s the art behind hunting rifle accuracy

I'll argue the opposing view. When I squeeze the trigger I know a well-executed shot will land where I point it. I don't shoot dots, but a hit on a large E-type or IPSC target only tells me I have a hit, vice landing within a known radius where I wanted to hit.

Ever seen a spot like this in a barrel?

Friends don't let friends buy Salvage. Not fair as I'm told many tend to shoot better than they should. Still, it's like picking up a turd by the clean end.

Is it possible to become a really skilled long range shooter with a semi-auto?

"Lower your standards." Ha! A coat, sling, and glove vice a bipod or something else to rest the rifle on; standing, sitting, prone, rapids, and mandatory reloads; no-sighter (zero confirmation) wind calls based on your best estimate and the info written in your data book.

Is it possible to become a really skilled long range shooter with a semi-auto?

ANY American in good standing can shoot in the annual National Matches. Enroll in the Small Arms Firing School (rifle and ammo provided) and the next few days fire in the National Trophy Individual Match and The President's Match. The matches are challenging, not impossible. I've seen...

Is it possible to become a really skilled long range shooter with a semi-auto?

Soldiers and civilians have been doing it since at least 1938 -- with iron sights to 2015 when 4.5 power scopes were authorized (from standing, sitting, and prone). You can start by taking a clinic and shooting your first service rifle match. Some clubs will loan you everything you need, with...

Are you cross-checking your charges against a reloading manual? Sounds like you are compressing your powder charge -- it's what the "C" means as you're approaching maximum. This usually happens earlier with military cases than commercial.

    Joining the ARMY?

What do you want to do in the service? With a computer science masters, 8-odd years in IT, a family, physical owwies, and a desire to keep (and grow in) your present day job I'd recommend Officer Candidate School (OCS) or Officer Training School (OTS) for like positions in the Reserves or...

Oh Heck, you're right. Disregard -- I was thinking of WST (my favorite powder for .45 Automatic). Varget (also known as Australian Defense Industries 2208) is known for temperature stability. Early onset memory loss. 🤪

.308 Overall Length Varation with 175gr SMK

Match bullets gain consistency (over other styles) by being base-drawn, making for uniform bases and boat-tails. Long-range shooters and manufacturers will crimp and trim (true) hollow point tips. Shooters will gain consistency at the cost of a slight windage loss. Most will not see a...

Help with decision on replacing barrel or new rifle

I agree with Downhill. I just bought a Krieger 1-10 M24 blank from Bugholes and had John Scanlon in Pennsylvania turn it into an SR-25 barrel in around 90 days. I'm sure he can turn an available Krieger or Bartlein blank for a 700 much quicker. If you can use lead bullets for range...
