    5.56 ammo is pretty dang light too. I wouldn't want to be carrying the equivalent amount of 7.62 or .300.

    I would guess that is the case. Shorter than DPMS/Armalite and longer than standard ar15.

    Why are these so hard to find? Does S&W actively keep magazine manufacturers out of the game? I see that ProMag makes magazines for the M&P but they're nearly as hard to get. I guess I'm just wondering why no one has stepped up to the plate to make them, it seems like there would be money in it.

    Billet vs forged, and help me decide on a lower

    Billet lowers look cool. As far as overall strength, it's doubtful you'll see a difference unless your a materials scientist/engineer. Whichever one you get will likely stand up to more abuse than you'll dish out.
