Roger that!
I have been to shoots where the top shooter beat out a few hundred thousand dollars worth of gear with nothing more than a dirty old Mauser...maybe $500.00 worth with an old external adjustable scope. I have not seen this happen in some time, but as always it is the driver not the...
I do the same and to be honest I leave no stone unturned in my OCD quest for accuracy.
Hell...I enjoy the process! :)
As a counter point I though I would share the results of what happened when I loaded my gopher load for my new bolt 223.
52gr Speer / 25.5grs Win 748 (tossed not weighed)...
There are much cheaper ways to determine those variables and everybody that is already shooting at these distances already has the baseline equipment covered.
If you don't already have this equipment nor your rifles dope in use your assumption that this units inclinometer, compass, and...
Joe,
I suspect the burr you are referring to (or pieces of the burr/nicks in the bullet base) accounts for many fliers.
Something tells me I read something about what you are suggesting being tried before...IIRC it made the bullet harder to start straight? I can't remember for sure.
Either way...
Really!?
So you can outshoot Bruce Baer and his record setting 60 pound benchrest rifles with 80+ power scopes?
Bruce says he can't tell the difference between a round that barely bumps a ten thou indicator and one that wobbles 6 thou.
7 thou he Can see 6 he can not. I dont think Bruce...
I dont care about those things and wouldn't pay much if anything for what they offer.
The difference would come in the more expensive units ability to read through crap weather
I have built a few big 338s and while they have a place in my collection they mostly collect dust.
Until the market will accept a bullet 300+gr VLD 8-9 twist only I think it will stay that way.
The 338s are costly on all fronts to include recoil. If you want to shoot something big and fun at...
I came from Swaro, a few Leica LRFs, and switched to Vectronix this season.
Though my experience with the Terrapin is limited what I have seen is outstanding and yes, much better than advertized.
To be honest I have yet to find the range limits of this unit on man sized or animals....Far is my...
I have a couple of Edge rifles built on Remingtons. An 8.5 pound hunter (complete) and a 16 pound A-5 heavy rifle.
I had my mag box opened by a smith for the 300s. I got the box from Brownels...Did it about 10 years ago and cant recall the name.
Remington works just fine and is plenty strong.
Any of the barrels mentioned are capable of benchrest accuracy...never mind what you want to accomplish.
The smith you choose is far more important than the barrel you select.
The Rem Sendero is a nice option for a portable rifle. The hunter benchrest works well too
I sort of lost interest when I found it was being "leased" for 3,100.00 and 2 year wait.
Nice rig though!
The Prometheus is much more accurate than the Chargemaster. Faster too!
A cheap powder measure for volume the the GD503 with an Omega powder trickler (or equivalent ) is as at...
Interesting.
I never ran the stability numbers and it never even occurred to me that my 8 twist would not stabilize the 80grAmax (mine shoots bugholes)?
I shot all of mine and dont have a bullet to measure OAL and run it through the calculations.
Does anyone have an 80Amax handy?
My most accurate rifle is a 6mmbr....There is nothing more accurate at 600 yards, but....its a single shot for a reason. :)
The 6.5X47, 260, and the Creedmore are all great choices, feed well, and are better in the windy conditions.
Consistent accuracy is the key
Consistent accuracy at distance is the quest.
For instance place 5- 5 shot groups in side 1/2 inch at 100 yards and your rifle is a real shooter....your probably a fair shooter yourself!
Place 5-5 shot groups into 1/2 MOA at 300 yards is a significant...
I just switched from 10 twist to 8 and so for mine shoot better with the fast twist.
My 8 twist shoots the 52gr cheep Speer bullet (my gopher load) into a squeak over 1/4 minute out to 200yds.
I have some Btip and 50 Amax ready for testing in the next couple of weeks...will let you know if you like.
Take a fired case then slip in a bullet. If it goes in easy dont bother turning your necks.
If you have to push like hell or cant get the bullet in with your fingers you have found your problem.
