New load development: 168 SMK with IMR 4064

Sorry, been a very long week at work. Rifle is a custom Remington 700, 18" Shilen SS Select Match. I think I will drop it down to 42ish grains and see what I get. I found that my rifle REALLY likes 43.8 grains seated to factory length. Netted under 1/2moa group at 200 yards. BUT, I think that...

New load development: 168 SMK with IMR 4064

I have a solid 175 smk load that performs outstanding at 1300 yards. As for this load, max range is going to be 600 yard max. Guess that was some pertinent info that I left out.

New load development: 168 SMK with IMR 4064

I will have to go and read that. I did find a chronograph I could use and will get some velocity info. Mine will be a little slow since I am shooting an 18" barreled rifle!

New load development: 168 SMK with IMR 4064

Just started some new load development using IMR 4064 and 168 SMK. Cases are Federal, Winchester primers, loaded to factory length. I am not really sure I want to delve into different COAL, just want them to fit in my magazines without issue. I am thinking that I want to go back and try 42...

My son graduates AIT on Tuesday from Fort Lee. Wife and I are here through basically Wednesday and are looking for a few extracurricular activities. We have spent the last few days visiting civil war battle sights. Problem is, seen one kinda seen them all. We have visited the museum of the...

Gunsmithing Do new "custom" barrels have to be crowned by the gunsmith?

Slayer is correct. When you have a barrel chambered and installed, it includes cutting barrel to length and crowning.

    Gunsmithing A Real Gunsmith Question

When it is just me in the shop: Real metal (Pantera, old Metallica, that general era of metal) or classic rock (The Stones, The Doors, you get the idea). Amazing and beautiful things happen on my lathe. I think I will be borrowing the term "anti-personnel music". Thanks! When the boss is in...

As 2014 Approaches does this need to be addressed ?

Now having read everything thus far, I am still all for this. Nothing that "either side" (Frank and PRS) do well ever be perfect. Frank's suggestion about the TRL is good, not perfect. What it does help with is me, a small town MD, getting matches going with some of the details i may not...

As 2014 Approaches does this need to be addressed ?

Been following this, only on the top of page 3, so forgive me if this has been covered. This is for local matches to get local guys out and shoot. Yes? Then, why add in all kinds of rules, classifications, what-not? No reason to. Guy wants to come out and shoot his AR. Awesome. Guy wants to...

Gunsmithing A couple of questions for you Pro's

I am not a purist, well not totally anyways, but if you want a floating l head and a barrel nut, why not just build a savage to begin with?

    Feedback Good Guy List

Just bought a scope from Night Eagle. Superb communication, excellent scope, exactly as he stated. Came with lots of padding to prevent damage while in the hands of the shipper. (What can Brown break for you!) Thanks Night Eagle.

    New rifle in the family

Took it out today and here is my impression: 1: Definitely an MOA rifle. Match ammo from American eagle (designed for the socom rifle) produced .9" to 1" groups with me driving. Wife needs a little practice but still shot 1". 2: Trigger feels like my gravel driveway. Heavy, but consistent...

    New rifle in the family

I guess I should mention that not only am I am AR armorer for my agency, I am also a gunsmith with access to parts cheaper than the average joe. This will likely be built for less out of pocket than those others (not discounting their quality). And when the day comes for a new more accurate...

SMACK the SMILEY SUMMER 2013 - ENTRY OPEN!

This match made me realize how much work I need for consistency. Even that blasted rimfire at 50 yards is very difficult. Looking forward to the results. I think I cleaned up on the centerfire this time. Although I did darn good last timewith the centerfire. Thanks for all the hard work...

    New rifle in the family

After attending the Oregon Sniper Challenge, my said that she wanted to get in to precision rifle shooting with me. The catch was that she did not want a bolt gun, she wanted a gas gun. So we took a drive over the hill for some shopping and stopped by Sportsmans Warehouse to have a peak. After...
