    Re: .204 ruger-maximum range? well with a MV of 3600fps and a 55grn Berger (30" tube and 65000psi) jbm says it shouldn't go subsonic till about 1150 yards or so.

    Re: what lathe to start with i would keep an eye on ebay. Personally i would look for a south bend heavy 10. they often go on ebay for under 5000 which is a bit above the budget that you stated but there very nice lathes
