Holy Grail of Short Action 7mm Cartridges...?

Re: Holy Grail of Short Action 7mm Cartridges...? I think the 284 fits the bill nicely. If you use alpha mags you can load them out long enough, and it has plenty of horsepower to shoot anything up to the 180's well. In my experience, you can get around 150fps more out of the 284 than with...

    260 or 7mm-08

Re: 260 or 7mm-08 7-08 gets my vote, I have one in a 22" barrel and can get 2800fps from the 140's and 2680fps with the 162's, out of a 24" barrel you can do much better. As a long range round, the high BC of the 7mm bullets will kick the butt out of any 6.5mm round.

Hornady .30 208 A max for hunting? Why not?

Re: Hornady .30 208 A max for hunting? Why not? Well my father took my 300wsm rifle and some of my 208 AMAX loads to a hunt in Utah today, got a call earlier today from him telling me he took a nice buck at 400yds with it, shot dead in its tracks. No doubt about it that the 208 is great on...

    Savage Axis after some modifications.

Re: Savage Axis after some modifications. Nothing wrong with working on an Axis, very accurate bargain rifle. I always felt that all I would have to do to an axis is get a new trigger and add a cheek piece and it would be a fun, accurate and comfortable rifle to shoot. Too bad I'm all caught...

Switch barrel with different bolt faces?

Re: Switch barrel with different bolt faces? Savage rifles are the best for this sort of stuff, unless of course you go for a really expensive switch barrel rifle. switching barrels, bolt faces, and mags is easy and takes about ten minutes. I have a model 110 that I now use as a 243 and 284...

    ***.284 WIN LOADS***

Re: ***.284 WIN LOADS*** Anyone shooting some 160gr. TSX's out of their 284's? I just got in my barrel for my new Savage and plan on trying out some barnes bullets for my hunting loads, I'll be using RL-17 and shooting out of a 25" barrel.

Rifle Scopes Weaver Tactical and Viper PST

Re: Weaver Tactical and Viper PST I chose the Weaver because it had better glass, more travel and had locking turrets, which makes it ideal for hunting as well as target shooting. The Weaver has 100MOA total travel, and that isn't exaggerated, its actually a bit more than that on my Weaver...

    Barrel length ???

Re: Barrel length On an AR I love 18" 223 barrels, I think thats the perfect length on an AR. On a bolt, I don't think it really matters. Anything from 16-24" would work with the 223, just choose a length you are comfortable with (I would presume you would feel most comfortable with a 20"...

    Favorite trigger

Re: Favorite trigger Call me cheap, but I love Rifle Basix triggers,I have a Sav-1 thats jumped between a few rifles and it has never failed to perform to my expectations and has been consistent on each of them. Right now it sits on a Savage 110 that I'm using to build a lightweight 284...

    Barrel Life in 7mm's.....?????

Re: Barrel Life in 7mm's.....????? A 280 or 264 should get around 2000-3000 rounds before the barrel gives out if using hot to moderate loads, you can probably get a lot more if using light loads.

Does bullet weight variance .1gn affect accuracy

Re: Does bullet weight variance .1gn affect accuracy I am just going to mirror what everyone said about weight sorting not being worth it, it really isn't. When I first started reloading, I did an experiment with a box of 50 200gr. Barnes bullets, I weight sorted them to within .1gr of 200gr...

    Savage or Remmy

Re: Savage or Remmy Go with the Savage, if I was looking for a lefty bolt action I wouldn't consider anything else. I have two Savages, one in 300WSM, and another that I picked up from a guy on another forum in 243 and 284, both rifles are great, although I haven't shot the newest addition...

    .284 barrel life?

Re: .284 barrel life? I have seen a lot of people say 2000-3000 rounds depending on how hot you load it, I think that's pretty accurate. I have a 284 in the mail as we speak that I will use for hunting and the occasional range trip, it's a 25" 1 in 8 5R benchmark barrel. You won't regret...

    Ideal Big Game Hunting caliber?

Re: Ideal Big Game Hunting caliber? 300WSM will do fine for big game, kicks pretty light with a muzzle brake (had one installed just last weekend). You can shoot just about any bullet weight out of a 300WSM almost as well as the 300WM, so if you're thinking about the WSM, I say go for it.

    4000MR

Re: 4000MR 3100 is smoking with the 190's, and primer and brass look fine, if the accuracy is fine then I think you got a keeper.

    200gr Barnes LRX B.C.?

Re: 200gr Barnes LRX B.C.? i use them exclusively as my hunting round, and I would say it's very close, it might actually be a bit conservative. plugging it into my ballistic calculator with my muzzle velocity of 2950 out of my 300wsm matches my dope almost exactly.
