Rebarrel options for a long action 270

Re: Rebarrel options for a long action 270 Forgot to add that almost any long action cartridge would want a longish barrel to go with it. On barrel weight, if you are carrying it up a mountain, go thin. If you are shooting long range, go fat.

Rebarrel options for a long action 270

Re: Rebarrel options for a long action 270 If you are stuck with factory mags, I think that rules out 284 as it would be too fat. I think an 280 Ackley Improved would be a great round.

    I'm takin the 338LM plunge

Re: I'm takin the 338LM plunge I was at an F class match this past weekend. I asked around, nobody had ever heard of someone shooting F class with a 338 Lapua. 22 lbs is not sufficient to shoot one without a brake. I used to own a Sako TRG-S 338 LM. No brake and no recoil pad. I shot 10...

    338 federal??

Re: 338 federal?? Generally speaking, I think that it is underpowered. Most people find the 308 to be a "worst case" in terms of drop and wind compared to 260/284/6.5-284/300WM/338 Lapua/etc. I don't think you can fit enough powder in the case to drive the match bullets (either 250 or 300)...

    260 Build

Re: 260 Build For my 260, it seems like the bullets stick pretty far out of the case when loaded to mag length (2.8"). I don't think you gain much on the 260 going to a long action. If I had the action, I would probably go with a 284. Those things rock, but it is personal preference.

700P, XCR Long Range Tactical, or 5R?

Re: Remington 700P .223 Vs. Remington 700 VS SF II . My 700P has shot many a tiny group. The 5Rs get amazing reviews.

    30-378 Weatherby VS 338L

Re: 30-378 Weatherby VS 338L I had a Sako TRG-S in 338 Lapua. This is a hunting rifle, not tactical. I shot one deer with it. A second shot was not needed. Shooting a hunting weight rifle in 338 Lapua is not a fun experience (mine had no muzzle brake or recoil pad). I don't think it is...

    Anyone familiar/experienced with the 6.5x284?

Re: Anyone familiar/experienced with the 6.5x284? Re-17 will give much better velocity. I just remembered he was using 139 Lapua, not 142 SMK. Several people I talked to swore by Re-17. Not sure what they were using it for other than 6.5x47.

Lets ask the experts - 223 barrel shorten

Re: Lets ask the experts - 223 barrel shorten You should be able to stabilize a 77 if you go short. I have a 16" AR with 1/9" twist that loves 77s. This rifle throws 80s sideways. My competition rifle is a 22" PSS that holds sub MOA at 500 with 80s. Short is good.

700P, XCR Long Range Tactical, or 5R?

Re: Remington 700P .223 Vs. Remington 700 VS SF II . My P shoots sub MOA with 80s at 500. Don't get the SF II. You will either regret it or just end up making a trip to the gunsmith faster than you planned.

    Anyone familiar/experienced with the 6.5x284?

Re: Anyone familiar/experienced with the 6.5x284? 6.5x47 is the way to go. Less powder than a 260 plus sharper shoulder should give better accuracy. The guy next to me at a midrange match was getting 3000 fps with 142s. My gunsmith (active F-Open guy) says he knows several people that pull...

    16inch Barrel Sniper Rifles

Re: 16inch Barrel Sniper Rifles Since I started hunting with a 16" AR, I have found smaller is better. This year I used a 20" AR10 and hated it because it was so big. If you aren't going to shoot it way out there, the difference in velocity isn't going to hurt you. A 16" gun will not beat...

    Why Remington over Winchester?

Re: Why Remington over Winchester? I own 3 remingtons and all have been substantially better than 1 MOA. I think the number one reason for Remington 700 over Winchester for custom builds is ease of machining. Since the Remington is a cylindrical action, it can be trued on a lathe. This is...

    What height rings

Re: What height rings I prefer 1.5" height. Available from Larue. Most AR rings are 1.4". Do not go below 1.4" unless you want to turn your head sideways.

    AI stock color

    "Tactical" 223 Rifle Project...Suggestions?

Re: "Tactical" 223 Rifle Project...Suggestions? I have a Rem PSS 223 cut down to 22" in a McMillan A4. Holds sub-MOA vertical out to 500 yards with 80g Noslers. Yes, it is a 9" twist.

Cleaning question to AICS 1.5 owners

Re: Cleaning question to AICS 1.5 owners I just remove the butt pad. Cordless drill and 30 seconds and you are done.

I should know better than to ask this...

Re: How ugly is it going to be? Make sure the stock is painted in the barrel channel and it will look fine. Like JJones said, better too much air than too little.

    remington sendero

Re: remington sendero My 308 VS (short action sendero) consistently shoots under 1/2" at 100. I also have a 300WM sendero in an AICS that shoots even better. Of course, those are both mid 90's guns. $1300 sounds steep. Cabela's prices are usually not that high. Gun shows or the for sale...

    Rem 700 5R accurizing

Re: Rem 700 5R accurizing R&D precision used to do something like you are talking about. Like has been said before, they shoot really good from the factory. If you aren't going after full custom, I wouldn't touch it until you knew that it didn't shoot to your specs.
