Help This is my first attempt at setting up a rifle

@StinkFinger, I have shot and set up 3 different HMR's, it is a very good starting place for what you intend. .308 is a great caliber for mostly shooting deer and occasionally shooting steel. If you said mostly shooting steel and occasionally shooting deer I would suggest you consider a 6.5...

    Rifle Scopes Midweight Hunting Scope

All of the scopes you selected will work and work well. I prefer the NF. Check the wt. carefully on each. You might find it hard to hit your 10lbs target with the NF.

Help This is my first attempt at setting up a rifle

Let me add: There is a tremendous treasure trove of knowledge stored in the collective membership on this forum. Most are willing to help but they are not very tolerant of trolls or people who think they know everything but ask questions anyway just to waste people's time in an attempt to show...

Help This is my first attempt at setting up a rifle

Well that helps. -1.) Make sure your scope is mounted correctly (not canted) 0.) Run a box of factory match ammo through the gun to get it on paper and as a comparison baseline (is the gun an out-of-the box 1 MOA rifle, 3/4 MOA, or 1/2 MOA? ... ) 1. ) Get yourself some decent reloading dies...

That will work. Would help if you state what you are shooting at, what sized targets and what you hope to accomplish.

Bartlein Steel Barrel vs Proof Research Carbon Fiber Barrel

Heat dissipation? - Maybe, but you won't find a measurable difference that is actually meaningful. Weight and balance? - big difference. Looks? - Eye of the beholder ... Accuracy/Precision? - you won't be able to tell the difference between a Proof, Bartlien, Lothar Walther, Kreiger...

Next-level gaming the system & switch barrel guns ...

Agree, any set up that requires a barrel vice or 40-100ft-lb torque wrench is not a "true" switch-barrel rifle. A true take-down/switch rifle can be put together with a single tool (or none) that you can fit in your pants pocket (e.g. single allen wrench).

How long do I have to wait for a quality manufacturer to make me a lightweight factory takedown rifle?

AX is not a bad way to go ... on the heavy side for hunting but my experience with AX/AT is that the barrel will RTZ with proper torque to set screw.

How long do I have to wait for a quality manufacturer to make me a lightweight factory takedown rifle?

Watch the following - skip forward to 13:40. At 14:30 - ish Notice how quickly you can cycle a Blaser bolt. Watch the whole thing if you are interested in seeing shooters truing data in the higher latitudes.

Does anybody else use a rifle as a tool?

Here's a tool ... shot a deer in the head at 621 yards on the opposite hill in the background ... I did the math ... only $248.00/pound for the meat we harvested. I don't think my wife appreciates how hard I work to put food on the table ...

    Bolt Action Build Advice

Depends if you are shooting targets more or hunting more. If you are shooting targets more then the 280 AI - it will make you smile at distance. If you are mostly hunting then maybe .30-06 for the availability of just about any kind of ammo anywhere in the world - but you reload so hmmmm ...

    Ruger Precision vs Accuracy International?

What people are saying here about the RPR you could say about any off the shelf factory gun - Remington, Savage, Bergara ... with enough time and money new parts gun smithing, you can get them to shoot as accurate as an AI even slightly better -but will they be same thing? Will they be all...

How long do I have to wait for a quality manufacturer to make me a lightweight factory takedown rifle?

With the Blaser you typically buy a dedicated scope for each barrel so you are swapping out scoped barrels and you have no RTZ problems. More expensive as you have more scopes but it just works. My AI/ AT and AI/PSR take the more common approach of screwing in different barrels. There is a...

    Rifle Scopes MOA Wind Math

I have yet to find software that doesn't underestimate wind for the 3-oh-hate. Easy fix: Start off with start a lower wind cheater number ( 7mph ) and hold 1/2 the distance in MOA and use the "hunt and peck" method with software to fine tune the base number for your .308. There is a...
