Mil / MOA calculation. Yes, again....

NO!!! He's wrong and is confusing you! You were right the first time. A mil is 1/1000 the distance, AT ANY DISTANCE. But you CANNOT mix systems. 1/1000 of 3600 INCHES is 3.6 INCHES. 1/1000 of 100 METERS IS .1 METERS, which translates to 10 cm. A mil at 356 meters is .356 meters. A mil at...

    M40a1 build guide

LOL! Well, speaking of the brown turd, I was also wondering if the A1s ever saw service in woodland "turds" towards the end. What time frame were you with the M40A1s?

Did the Corps ever get away from the black Pelican cases during the tenure of the M40A1, to another color like OD or tan?

    Rifle Scopes Checking scope tracking

The only advantage I can see to testing the scope by shooting is if you suspect the recoil may be affecting the scope in some way, whether through the bias spring or something loose within.

Spent Primer Pushed Out on Reduced Loads... HELP!

If your brass will be dedicated to reduced loads, then an old trick is to drill the flash hole larger.

    Groups smaller than bullet diameter?

LOL! I'm almost certain that "big black box" is supposed to be the aim point. You center your crosshairs in it ("quartering" it), and what you are calling a "mothball" is the target. You would click down five clicks to use it at 100 yards (quarter moa clicks). I might be wrong, but that's how I...

Advanced Marksmanship How do you calculate wind correction without a ballistic calculator?

What a blunder the "3/4 mil" statement was. It wasn't just a typo either! He built a whole diagram breaking the reticle down, drawn to scale as though the dots were 3/4 mil in diamter, and even a description on how to use the fictitious reticle for ranging. I had to wonder if he had ever looked...

Unertl M40A1 Scope on fleabay 1 day left

Was the USO contract for new units, or refurb only? I have never seen a USO on an M40A1. Also, I didn't know that Unertl (company) was still around. I thought Rocky Green was the last owner and Unertl is no longer? ------- edit: Oh, wow! Now I see this is an old thread.

Sleuthing the Federal Gold Medal match load... Mk 316 Mod 0?

Actually, the common understanding is that it's too soft, and the primer pockets open up after a few firings, even with "moderate" loads. Unfortunately, Lapua seems to have become this way lately as well.

    Rifle Scopes Checking scope tracking

Did you ever find a scope you didn't have to return? Mil spacing should be .9" at 25 yards by my math. Or do you mean your mil "points" are 5 mils apart? But, speaking of "points", you bring up a good point that the test doesn't have to be done at 100 yards.

Advanced Marksmanship How do you calculate wind correction without a ballistic calculator?

True, with practice both can be mastered. But hold is the same regardless of range, and once hold is mastered wind is much more important when shooting at long range. A shooter that can hold within a MOA will find himself out of luck if he cannot estimate wind at long range. A one mile per hour...

Advanced Marksmanship How do you calculate wind correction without a ballistic calculator?

Wind deflection is not purely lateral. If it were, then you'd be correct. But every competetive long range shooter I know understands that deflection also has an angular component, which is why a bullet that is deflected earlier in its flight will be deflected more by the time it reaches the...

    Groups smaller than bullet diameter?

Some military standards use outside-to-outside, in which case a one hole group would be the diameter of the bullet. In the real world we use center-to-center, as it more realistically tells the true amount of dispersion.

    XM118LR questions

Which prompts two more questions. What is the purpose of harder bases for the military? If they can supply harder bases, then why wouldn't they just make them all that way and solve their soft primer pocket PR debacle?

    XM118LR questions

WTH! I find this disturbing. So, civilians who are more likely to reload their brass time and time again get the soft crap that could have been harder??? If the idea is to sell more, their reputation precedes them and reloaders go to other brass. Bad marketing ploy, if that's the case. I...
