Do you remove muzzle brake during cleaning?

I agree. Flame cutting would normally leave some type of observable pattern.

Do you remove muzzle brake during cleaning?

That's why I asked. If Butches has ammonia in it, that would be my guess. Does a shoulder on the brake interface with the muzzle? I'm wondering why the pitting would be all directions around the muzzle, not just at the bottom. An interface is the only thing I can think of that might cause the...

What is your cleaning regimen? Especially, what solvents?

    M40a1 build guide

I had heard that slotting done in-house at Quantico was lug slotting (without the half-moon divot cuts), even on the A1s (C and E actions). Does anyone know for certain if this is true/untrue?

    Natural Point of aim question

I still think the term "bone only" is misleading. The whole purpose of the sling is so that you can relax the muscles and allow the bones alone to support the weight of the rifle. Without the sling you have to use muscle to support both the arm and the rifle.

    Natural Point of aim question

Well, bless you for trying, but there's no such thing as "bone only", unless you have your hand or arm laying between the ground and your forestock. You need the sling for the bone to give the support and keep the butt in your shoulder. Otherwise, the butt will pull away from your shoulder...

    .308 168gr vs 175gr

Depends on the rifle. Barrel twist and harmonics are factors. My 24" 1:12 definitely prefers 168 over 175, accuracy-wise. But, at longer range I would hedge the 175 for staying supersonic and better wind bucking to 1000 yards. However, my first shooting at 1000 yards was with 168s, as the...

    Alternative Vietnam Sniper rifles

The problem I have with such a scenario is logistics. Can't shoot the weapon if you don't have the ammo. How could this soldier keep himself stocked with such an oddball cartridge in Tim-buck-Cam-bow-deeuh? Unless he essentially viewed it as a disposable weapon once he ran out of what he brought...

Did I ruin a great shooter?

Was the barrel removed from the action? Before torquing anything, I'd disassemble the action from the stock and check the bedding surfaces for contaminants or damage. Check for any new nicks or dents on the receiver at the bedding surfaces, and dings or gouges in the bedding of the stock. Clean...

    Bore cleaning compromise

Like many here I found that shooting a fouled bore led to better and more consistent accuracy, plus I saved a bunch on time and cleaning materials. However, I was concerned about the carbon retaining moisture as some say it is prone to do. So then I went after the carbon to remove it using lots...

    M40a1 build guide

As usual, rlm, you're a great help. In fact, I finally get it (I think). I always thought the pad was laid on the left side of the stock and left sticking up past the top to "raise" the comb. But now I understand that narrow strips are laid along the top of the comb to raise it, hence the 1"...

    M40a1 build guide

LOL! More like "chinweld" on the M40A1 :) Thanks. I know what you mean about building up a pad. I've thought about doing that, but had two reservations. 1) It would force the bottom of the face more to the left, preventing a good, vertical head placement, and 2) I was wondering if there...

    M40a1 build guide

I have another M40A1 question I've been meaning to ask... When prone behind my M40A1 with the scope all the way back in the rings, I have a heck of a time getting a full sight picture when trying to lie straight behind the rifle. I have to angle my body to get my head forward far enough to...

    Reloading press induced runout?

Sooooooo, what's the big deal about an arbor press? I mean, if a press can NOT be responsible for runout, why buy an arbor press?
