Rifle Scopes Can you leave a rifle scope in a hot car?

Seriously?? If the pressure in the scope is ambient at 14.7 psi at sea level when assembled in a 68-degree F assembly room, then raising that temperature to 150-degrees F would raise the internal pressure to 16.98 psi, a mere 2.28 psi. The seals cannot withstand that? Then how are we able to...

    M40a1 build guide

.580" will get him a usable clip slot, but to be properly machined for the older actions the slot should not start out any wider than .540". That's their story, and they're sticking to it. From what I understand, the pigment changed from a translucent to a solid, milled pigment which could...

Remington vs. Winchester Brass - Feedback Needed

When you can't find any because as soon as it becomes available it gets bought up, then that could be a reason. BUT, when it doesn't even come up on the market, that's another story. I believe Winchester is using all their brass in their factory loaded ammunition, with none left for reloaders...

MagnetoSpeed V2 V3 side by side

Of course, the next step is to mount them "side by side" on a barrel and compare readings. (Can two be mounted on the same barrel without interference?)

    adjusting for wind

Great thread. I can't add much to what has already been said, but have a couple points that may be helpful, though maybe not necessarily where you are shooting now, ShebasDad. If you are ever on a range with wind flags, the wind gauge at the shooter can be used to determine the "hang" of the...

    Winchester to Lapua brass?

Every lot of powder will need to be tested. When switching lots I always run a velocity comparison between factory FGMM and a few different loadings to find which one matches the factory velocity at that same range session. That is one reason why you will see different loadings from different...

Advanced Marksmanship How many people here "snap in"?

LOL! That's nothing. We actually pointed our weapons and shot at eachother! Blanks, of course, but if the idea of snapping in while pointing towards eachother would disturb you, well, let's just say you'd have to get over it in a hurry ;)

Advanced Marksmanship Carbon and copper, what can it hurt?

I'd really like to know how much truth there is to the idea that carbon can attract and retain moisture which can pit a bore. I guess there may not be any hard and fast ruling out on that, as humidity level, temperature and temperature swings, length of time, and barrel material could cause very...

    Mailing a firearm

It is interesting that they only specifically say you need to declare handguns. CFR27, sec.478.31(a) makes no such distinction, and requires that all firearms be declared. Also interesting is that they mention one-day shipping only for handguns. Perhaps they dropped the one-day shipping...

Do you worry about lost fundamentals?

Interesting. I'd include protecting civilian lives in my list somehow. But, keeping it in context, and in all fairness, if you're down to having only one hand usable, you'd more than likely be fighting for your own life at that point like you said.

    M40a1 build guide

Looks like you have all the parts together for a nice build! The bolt was bead blasted and hydrochloric acid etched prior to hot bluing, and the jeweling looked removed when first done, but where the bolt rubs the pattern of the jeweling shows through.

    Mailing a firearm

USPS, you have to declare it. FEDERAL LAW (CFR27, sec.478.31(a)) also requires that firearms be declared when using a common carrier (e.g. FedEx, UPS, et.al.) Also, both UPS and FedEx ("common carriers") require one-day shipping by their own rules, and USPS requires shipping by Priority Mail...

    M40a1 build guide

While a take-off stock is a nice piece of history, a new McMillan stock will not have been beat to death. Nice, fresh start. Check with your gunsmith about bolt jeweling. My M40A1 started with a jeweled bolt, and the jeweling does show through the blue. But, I'm sure with suitable prep there...

Need press to be removable. What are you using?

Every good work bench should have a vice. So...... I mount every machine on a section of angle iron that can be clamped in the vice for quick and easy swapping, and have the vice handy too for all kinds of other projects.

    Mailing a firearm

Here are a couple stupid questions that need to be answered before anyone can give you a good answer: Hand gun or long gun? Are you limiting the question to "mailing" through the United States Postal Service?

    M40a1 build guide

Looking good, Mr. Hudson. For that you'd do better to get post-'64 steel trigger guard and floorplate (long action). A little easier to find, and a little less expensive as well.
