    Self Defense or Murder

A couple comments in this thread like this. Y'all ever shot something alive with a standard self defense chambering (I have, just not human)? This isn't Hollywood, folks. If you don't break down bone structure or hit CNS, you're unlikely to drop a guy on the spot. They're either going to...

Interesting take on ELR matches: Mark and Sam

I don't think people should be able to pass on conditions. Part of this sport is being a shooter, and if you can't figure out how conditions will affect your shot....particularly at long distances where that really IS the game...what is the point? I get the point about conditions being...

Gunsmithing Throat to a dummy cartridge

This. For a single feed, just seat the base of the bullet above the neck/shoulder junction so you never have to worry about donut issues interfering with the bullet seating.

Sidearms & Scatterguns 460 Rowland vs 10mm Woods Defense

Honestly I gave up when you promoted 38s for bear defense. That's a revolver round too, you know.

Sidearms & Scatterguns 460 Rowland vs 10mm Woods Defense

If you choose to bounce 9mms or 38s off a bear's skull because it gives you comfort you are more familiar with it, that is your decision. Just because there is an internet account of a 22 stopping a bear does not make it my choice. There is a minimum I am willing to confront a grizz with and...

Hunting & Fishing Prairie dog thread.

I have several times had hawks hit the carcasses about the same time I recover from the recoil and get my scope back on it. Wonderful!

Sidearms & Scatterguns 460 Rowland vs 10mm Woods Defense

If you want to trust your life to taking down a charging griz with a 9mm or 38 penetration, that's your business. But not me. But you're right, you need to be able to control the gun and you also need to be able to carry it and not get tired of the weight and leave it in the truck. My 329...

Sidearms & Scatterguns 460 Rowland vs 10mm Woods Defense

Smith and Wesson 329PD. You don't even notice the weight on your belt. Look at the numbers, lighter than a semi option. As for "fun" to shoot with full bore loads? No, but if you have the 500SW grip on it (now standard, I believe) it is manageable and you can get through a couple cylinders...

Sidearms & Scatterguns 460 Rowland vs 10mm Woods Defense

Not meaning to sound like a jerk, but if you say such things, it means you've never shot such guns and don't know what you are talking about. I can shoot a 4" 44Mag without hearing protection and it's loud. Shoot a similar braked or ported handgun...I have...once...tinnitus for 12 hours. As I...

Sidearms & Scatterguns 460 Rowland vs 10mm Woods Defense

If I'm in big bear country I'm carrying a lightweight 44Mag or 41Mag. They're lighter than semi autos anyways. The 41Mag is ported, so if I have the choice I carry the 44. I made the mistake of firing that 41 without ear protection ONCE. I'd do it in defense of life again, but only then...

Sidearms & Scatterguns Pistol Break In Proceedure

I've read a lot of questionable advice on various forums, but this makes the finals for the dumbest advice I've ever heard. If my life may depend on a gun, damn straight I'm going to make sure the gun is reliable and reliably feeds the ammo I will carry in it. My wife's carry gun is uber...

    Need a little reloading advice

I also do powder charge first then optimize seating, it's always worked for me. Unless a particular bullet has special needs due to its design, I start 0.020" off the lands for the powder charge work then optimize the seating depth.

    Going back to factory/semi custom?

I'm not much on factory rifles as the barrels tend to be a pain to clean. I'm not much a fan of the cost of custom rifles and waiting a long, long time to get them in my hand. I am a big fan of using a vise and a barrel nut to install a high quality barrel of exactly the specs I want on an...

    How To Make Money?

Here's the rub. Putting myself in the spot of a potential employer, I see someone who just wants to work from home, not someone who has sellable skills which are well-defined and supported, and can make the case for working form home IN ADDITION to overall selling themselves as employable for a...

    Damn, nature. You scary.

We have cow parsnip here and if giant hogweed is worse I'd be dowsing the entire area in gasoline and lighting it up. A couple times I have inadvertently gotten cow parsnip on my skin then been out in the sun...what follows is a week or more of horrific itching and blisters followed by shedding...

    How To Make Money?

The first thing missing, is what are your skills or qualifications? That is what will dictate what you can do from home. Frankly, people who generally tell you they became independently wealthy from working at home with no clearly professed skills are blowing smoke up your ass and trying to...

If you see that MFN Irish SOB shot that bastige

The only constant in farming is that stuff breaks at the most inconvenient times. I grew up farming, I still live on 15 acres have haven't totally shaken the bug. I plant about an acre of corn each year as deer bait. I have a circa 1974 IH674. All I had to do was brush hog the 1 acre and a...

    RL33 for 7mm Rem Mag

RL33 is an awesome powder for the 338 Lapua and Edge with 285-300gr bullets. Therefore too slow for the 7mmRM. Try Re22/23/26 or H1000.

    Dumb Handloading Question

Your understanding is wrong. I have not shot a factory load out of my centerfire rifles in 20 years. It is all handloads. Unless you are an anal BR shooter not bumping shoulders and running extremely tight necks, there is no reason not to shoot handloads. My 300WM hunting rifle I bump the...

Hunting & Fishing Subsonic 300 BO hunting ammo?

Only if you use a specially designed bullet like the Leigh which can have some real expansion at sub velocities. Otherwise it's more akin to shooting animals with field points, which is about the most cruel way to go about it. A real broadhead opens a 1.25" hole.
