    You can get that in WI too in late summer. Just have to get over the mental aspect of it and and get on with life. Dress for it and enjoy. Three hour snowshoe hike in central WI for me yesterday.. around -7F. Merino base layer, bibs, and wool sweater was perfect.

    I'm in WI and never had any dealings with the big bears, but what about a 12 gauge with slugs or sabots? I suspect it may do the job for the little deer and the big bears with both in close quarters. Ammo plentiful, recoil manageable, guns available and handy in brush. Just throwing it out there...

    Dropped a running WI whitetail at 200yds with a Savage 210 12ga with 3" Win Supreme Platinum Tip Sabot. Not pleasant to shoot in that light gun but they do the job. Slug recovered under offside shoulder skin after going through ribs, lungs, and offside shoulder blade.

    No pics because I really wasn't sure how it would turn out... but we'll call them "chili-kase-hunds" (chili cheese dogs): venison mettwurst with chili, made with ground venison, and extra sharp grated WI cheese. Pretty damn fine eats.
