    Why doesn't Remington offer a 700 with a 24" M24/M40 Profile Barrel?

Take a 26" P (or PSS) and have someone cut 2" of the barrel. Its a lot easier than Buying the 2" barrel and welding 4 more inches on. While you are at it, have them cut off the chamber end, and machine in a new tight chamber without the excessively long throat.

    ladder test 338 lapua

Take a OAL that has the bullet touching the lands, and find the charge weight that shoots well at the fast node of your rifle right under obvious pressure signs (and work up slowly from a lot lower CW). Now as you back the bullet off of the lands, pressure will go down until you are way-way far...

    Simple question: barrel length/twit/velocity/stabilization

Which would take a lot of the fun out of being here.........

    question about headspace inconsistency

Ideally, yes. What you have here is a failure to think the problem through! ! ! What you wanted is to size the 2.117s down to 2.114 (-0.003) but size the 2.115s down only to 2.114 (-0.001). See, now they are both the same--which is good. Secondly, you just barely touched the shoulders on the...

    338 Lapua Factory Ammo Questions

Here is the approximate math for you: If you were shooting 223/5.56*45 it takes roughly 500 rounds for the reloading gear to pay for itself. If you were shooting 308/7.62*51 it takes roughly 300 rounds for the reloading gear to pay for itself. If you were shooting 338.......*69 it takes roughly...

What are the benefits of meplat trimming and closing?

Meplat trimming makes the variance in BC go down (better). Meplat pointing (Widen) makes the BC go up (better still).

    .308 155gr options

Scenars, SMK (2156), Berger 155.5 Full Bore, Berger Hybrids all work well. If you can find the node near 2925-2950 fps you are good to go. The argument wrt wind is valid, BTW.

    Simple question: barrel length/twit/velocity/stabilization

    A) 1:12 twist is marginal with the 175, 1:11.25 is optimal with the 175 and most people can get away with up to 180-190s with a 1:12. B) my guess is that you will lose more like 75-110 fps from chopping 6" off the barrel.

    Max effective range of .308

The 168 SMK goes subsonic at 909 yards according to JBM. So the effective range is way less than 1000 yards. The US military considers the 308W maximum range 800 yards for man sized targets: 175 SMK. It is not humane to soot at dear-sized animals over 500 yards with a 308W. Given the right...

    SMK 155 recipe?

47.8 gr in Win Cases -- caution load hot at the very edge of sane pressures. 47.4 gr in Lapua cases 0.015 from the lands

interpreting ladder test with 155 lapua scenars and varget,

For example: I shoot 155 Scenars in my M40, but my long range load is set at a COAL of 2.943 (-0.015 from the lands) in the 2925-2950 fps range--not magazine length. My 155 Scenar benchrest load runs 2.820 (magazineable) but is down in the 2625 fps range.

What's up with my lapua brass

There are 2 major differences: a) neck thickness b) case capacity For a) you will need to uniform the necks, or use a different bushing to size the neck. For b) you will have to find a different power charge. In 308 Lapua cases take 0.4 gr less powder than Win cases take for the same MV.

    Headspace question

In any event, A) it is never necessary to push the shoulder more than 0.002 when sizing an already fired case. B) it is fairly dangerous to push the shoulder more than 0.005 when sizing an already fired case.

interpreting ladder test with 155 lapua scenars and varget,

155 Scenars in Win cases have a Node in the 46.2 range and another node in the 47.8 range (-0.3 for Lapua cases) with Varget. The step size of 0.5 is simply too big to find the node. A step size of 0.2 or 0.3 is prefered not to step over a node and miss it. Question, What would be the COAL in...

    338 LM build

No, not really. The Remmy and Savage are just barely capable of dealing with the forces involved. If all you want is a gun in the safe that is a 338LM and run a few boxes of ammo through it, they are fine. But if you want to shoot the thing day in and day out............ Much better at this...

    brake wont fit Help

There is a 0.001 to 0.002 error in the threads that were cut. Not visible to the eye, but plainly obvious to the part getting threaded on. My guess is you take a dial caliper to the threads and take a few measurements the error will become obvious.

    308 winchester vs lapua brass

Won't even be visible. I use (currently) Win Brass, mainly because I built up a large base of twice fired Win Brass from Black Hills once fired boxes of 308. I then completely match preped the brass, and developed a load using Optimal Charge Weight techniques. The developed load would typically...

    Feeding reliability with various actions

There are ways to tune up an action for better feeding, luckily just running 100+ rounds through the average action seems to tune it up rather well. First you need to identify the culprit. On my 1911 it was the feed ramp, so I polished it up and have not had a FtF in over 2000 rounds. On my M40...

Well so I guess they really are bad.

You need to adjust the trigger so that you can slam the end of the rifle onto a hard surface and not have the trigger release when the safety is off. Then You need to adjust the trigger so that you can slam the trigger itself with a hard surface and not have the trigger release when the safety...

Is this normal what could I be doing wrong

Without knowing the bullet <weight> nobody can tell if the load is hot or cold, dangerous of just fine. For a bullet in the 168-175 gr range, 42.5gr Varget is low to medium. 44-45 is more typical. For a 155gr bullet, 42.5 is getting towards the dangerously low side of things. For a 208gr...
