30-06 Bolt Gun: How much neck tension for best accuracy?

Benchrest with fitted neck: Best accuracy is 0.000 neck tension, just enough to hold the bullet as it is chaimbered. {Do not extract chambered cartrige.} Benchrest w/o fitted neck: Bet accuracy is 0.0005 neck tension. {Do not extract unfired cartrige is bullet is touching lands.} Benchrest with...

30-06 fired brass. Is this normal?

My 308 brass looks just like the bottom image. This is caused by a "generous" factory chamber (diameter.) Squishing it back to size is a recipie, over a few reload cycles, to help induce ICHS (incipient case head separation.) Oversizing the shoulders accelerates the ICHS.

Pressure point- Leave it or take it out

Free floating the barrel is standard practice. The only thing that should touch the barrel are the threads of the action and recoil lug.

Expanding case necks/getting out dings - the hard way

When I have a dinged neck, I feed in my Craftsman punch. Its neck is just right from 223 through 338 to widen and roundify the necks so they get processed perfectly in the sizing die.

How do you guys choose your .223 projectiles

I happen to shoot the 69 SMKs. I find them accurate, and forgiving. I don't shoot the AR15 over 500 yards, if I have a need to go further, I use the M40.

Relationship of Bumping Shoulders (Headspace) to Land Seating

With each of my rifles, I keep three cases. All three are within 0.00015 in base-to-shoulder. One closes with no pressure on the bolt, one closes with some pressure on the bolt, one won't close without unreasonable force on the bolt. I use the shortest one when setting up the body die, and use...

    .308 accelerators

Shooting a 22 caliber bullet from a 30 caliber bore still requires a 22 caliber twist rate! So that 1:12 twist of the 308 bore (1:10 for 30-06) just is not fast enough to stabilise the long projectile after the sabot is ripped off by the wind.

    Different loads shift POI left/right

Yep, normal. Different loadings cause the barrel to vibrate in different ways. The direction of the barrel when the bullet leaves the muzzle is critical.

    155 Palma vrs 175 SMK in 26" 308

The 155 Scdenar has almost the exact same shape as the 175 SMK, shape determiines BC. Inside the 155 Scenar has a hollow nose where the 20gr of lead would have been. 1200-1250 yards is the supersonic point at STP, with some altitude 1300 yards is feasible. BC is acceptably close (Litz) I...

    Case Head Separation help

First, before reloading any brass from this lot (again) use the paper-clip trick to detect thinning of the case web. Second, I believe it is unlikely that the body die shrank the diameter of the cases, I also believe that the shrinking of the case diameter would not lead to ICHS. Those symptoms...

Full - Length Sizing of Brass, Semiautomatic Rifles

Sometimes is is simply easier to measure the shoulder position. 1) If the shoulder position is in the right place, all you need do is to size the neck to hold another bullet. 2) If the shoulder is not in the right position, you size the shoulder so that it is. This might be 0.001 or as much as...

seating compressed loads.. inconsistent ogive 2 base measurements… need assistance

Just a side note: I double seat my compressed loads. In 308W I first <pre>sat to 3.000 OAL and then come back and seat for 0.015 from the lands.

    Blowing primers at MINIMUM load?

Google "RSI secondary pressure" and PRESTO https://www.shootingsoftware.com/pressure.htm What happens is the expanding blast wave reaches the back of the bullet and reverses coourse. The blast wave detonates the unburned (but still burning) powder on its way back towards the chamber. That is...

    Blowing primers at MINIMUM load?

I did bother to read the whole thread.... I had an episode similar to OP in which a near MIN load would show excessive pressure signs. There are a couple of physical things that can happen: 1) If the load is so light that the bullet starts to decelerate while in the bore the supersonic balst...

What is an exceptible ES and or SD for ELR?

Any SD under 15 is just fine, when measured over 50 rounds. Any ES under 30 is just fine, when measured over 50 rounds.
