Calculating down range velocities past 100 yards

Stick a sheet of aluminum foil on both sides of a tennis racket and clip a wire to each sheet. Then use a battery and voltage drop to simulate a microphone output. That should jack into the external trigger of the LabRadar. When the bullet passes through the head of the racquet it will bridge...

Hyper Stabilized Bullets - Jim Boatright

There are Doppler plots that show faster twists have lower supersonic drag. I think Hornady published one. I've heard rumors that Warner is going back to the RADAR range. Maybe they will measure their bullets out of barrels with various twists? Cheers,

Gunsmithing Timing a barrel - how much does it matter?

It varies from about 5 thousandths to 25 thousandths. It's worse when the barrel is cut down more than the nominal 1". The 25 thousandths run out happened after cutting 4" off the muzzle. You can see the banana bore by looking through it while it's rotating. I never record the jump rope...

Gunsmithing Timing a barrel - how much does it matter?

Yes. My first step Is to true muzzle's OD while cutting a barb for the chamber flusher hose. Then flip the barrel and align the chamber. Now it is easy to indicate the muzzle to mark 12 o'clock. Only then do I lock up the out board spider. Cheers,

Gunsmithing Timing a barrel - how much does it matter?

I make bushings out of 6061 tubing. Tapered bushings matched to barrel's taper. Cheers,

Gunsmithing Timing a barrel - how much does it matter?

I time the barrel to 12 o'clock high for the two reasons already mentioned. First to ensure that the barrel is perfectly aligned with the stock's barrel channel. And second to apply any banana curve so it increases the available elevation. It is also nice that I don't have to change my...

    Shot Show

Where are the records based on this year's requirements? Please consider allowing records to be set using targets smaller than the established target's area. Thanks,

Barrel contour and twist for Cheytac imp

That would be a great barrel for a barrel block chassis. This 8-twist Rock Creek barrel with a 375 SnipeTac is pushing 400gn CEBs at 2950 FPS. http://bugholes.com/index.php?route=...product_id=746 I would be interested in that Bartlein. Please PM details; if you decide not to pick It up. Thanks,

    Flyers at distance.

A different bullet might eliminate flyers. I found one bullet that I believe was sensitive to axial error. The plot below show three shots out of a 10 round string. The Es was 10 and SD was 4.2. But shot 6 was a no see at 2200y. After plotting the down range trajectory from the LabRadar it...

    Help With Spotting Rig, LRF...ConX?

Yes, you can focus on the target by using "smooth focusing for fine adjustments". But, you can't adjust the diopter to place the reticle in focus. Maybe you can look through a Leupold Tactical spotter and see if the reticle is acceptable to you? Cheers,

    Help With Spotting Rig, LRF...ConX?

I just got off the phone with Leupold technical support. They couldn't figure out how to adjust the diopter either. So, they talked to the engineer and he confirmed there is no diopter adjustment on the Leupold Mark 4 tactical spotting scope. Buyer beware! Cheers,

    Help With Spotting Rig, LRF...ConX?

This owner can't figure out the diopter adjustment either https://www.ar15.com/forums/t_16_5/5506_Diopter-adjustment-on-Leupold-Mark-4-Spotter-.html Here is the Mark 4 manual. It doesn't explain the diopter adjustment...

    Help With Spotting Rig, LRF...ConX?

When I tried to use a Leupold mark IV spotter; the reticle was blurred. When I asked the owner where tthe diopter adjustment was; he said there wasn't one. That's a deal breaker for me. Luckily I found a used STR80. So, I didn't need to figure out how to adjust st the Mark IV. Cheers,

Gunsmithing Mitutoyo Digital Solar Powered Caliper

I'm using the IP67 rated version of that caliper. https://www.amazon.com/Mitutoyo-500-...2Bcaliper&th=1 It has been working well for almost 2 years now. Once the internal battery is charged it will work in dark places for about 30 minutes. Cheers,

    Gunsmithing Preboring ?

I prebore to about 0.1" short of the body length. The prebore for a SnipeTac cartridge is ~2.4". That requires taper boring. Using my DRO it only takes a few passes with the compound to get the reamer to fully engage the pilot bearing. Cheers,

    Gunsmithing Preboring ?

I prebore because it's faster and I want the bushing to ride in the part of the bore I aligned to the lathe's center line. I chose this method because it was as simple as I could make it. 1) Tram compound parallel to reamer held between centers. 2) Align 3" of bore beyond what will become...

    Tonopah 2 Mile

When shooting 2 miles from a ridge across a valley into the mountain side; the mirage is not that bad. Heck, I use it to watch the wind. But, 2 miles flat across the desert floor; a white gong disappears into the mirage shortly after 1030hrs. Paint the gong orange and your looking at a lava...

Gunsmithing Gunsmiths thoughts on a Bartlein 5R

I've got no preference for a particular number of lands. But, I like the Russian rifling. It leaves more metal on the leade. My R-type barrels maintain consistent velocity longer than my conventionally rifled barrels. Cheers,

    375 Cheytac down to 338

I run a 338 SnipeTac. I couldn't make a neck bushing die work. The lead on the bushing catches the case mouth and folds it over. I made a forming die by running the chamber reamer into a die blank. If I chamfer the case mouth; I can neck down to chamber size and create a false shoulder in...
