    History of the SR25

ATK got the contract to operate Lake City in 1999 (taking over from OLIN-Winchester). They went very hard to cutting costs in very typically uninformed executive ways, deferring maintenance, and slashing whole departments like... QA. Yes, really: QA. The GWOT production surges didn't help but...

Night Vision New Armasight Units (Sidekick and Jockey 640s)

I like dovetails, but there are a number of (newer, lighter) bridges that work with minirails, like the Rayven so ponder other ways to get there as well.

Pin & Weld gone wrong... Borescope video and screenshots included

With a fixed stock to assure there is more gun behind the trigger than in front And to anyone else who has even shot an 18" 308 at full auto: why the extended mag? 20 is too much!

    Gun talk at work

This. Today we had a dumb teambuilder, made (remotely, on camera! so dumb) where we planted succulents in this sorta dumb kit. I didn't do it because the wife would be mad at me. She got the kit and planted it in her greenhouse, different than the people organizing it wanted to because she's...

    Night Vision PVS14 and 3x rail-mounted optic?

Yes and no. Ran a rig where I ran an RDS and could trade the day magnifier for a PVS-14, or -14 with the dedicated 3X magnifier on the front. It... worked. Note I had to run the RDS WAY forward for this to all fit. But better to run the NOD on your head, use laser for close and loud...

Night Vision Which budget night vision optic?

For hunting, I'll also say you want thermal instead of image intensifier (night vision). Practice a lot before shooting, as ID can be hard, but it is much much much easier to detect animals with thermal. If you stick with night vision, budget to include the illuminator, which will be a couple...

Markwayne Mullin Throws Down on US Senate floor

I only have tangential thoughts: 1) Wasn't there a whole kerfuffle about dress codes a year or three ago? Why the hell is Mullin not wearing a jacket? He's already a couple points down for decorum to me with that. 2) Forget politics, I personally liked how grandpa bernie said "you kids shut...

All 2026 cars to have a "kill switch"

I could be part of the conspiracy.

All 2026 cars to have a "kill switch"

If anyone cares, not really. Kill switch means remote, it is not. It is to build in some level of driver impairment detector then stop (likely, if you ask me, go to limp home mode so can only go slow with hazards on etc)...

Night Vision How do you set the diopter on a PVS-14?

Your choice. Officially, tweak the infinity stop to perfectly align. Me, I have had a couple of the stops loosen or crack or so on in the field (once because riding in a truck on rough roads a long time I think) and always slipping till stuck at short focus so I couldn't get it to infinity...

Night Vision How do you set the diopter on a PVS-14?

You got it. The random sparkles are called scintillations, but overall the image in the dark will be grainy, even for the highest resolution tubes, so easy to see individual dots at least when they are at reasonably high contrast. Usually the term "static" works great, half a dozen people...

Night Vision How do you set the diopter on a PVS-14?

I always teach it as "make the static sharp." If it looks pretty good, focus it more badly or look at something at the wrong distance. Use the day cap to make it darker to get scintillation. Same as always for diopter adjustment on riflescopes: do it fast, then look away for a moment. Your eyes...

Guns I laughed at but now regret not buying

These were never cheap in at-the-time dollars either. C. 1990 I actually handled one for sale (as I did quite like them) and it was north of $5000 even then. College kid? Might as well have been One Million Dollars.

    Pmag 7.62x51 GenM3 question

I have shot a decent number (scores, not hundreds+ as on the bolt gun) of 175 FGGM, M118LR, and the equivalent of both from BH through at least 3-4 Gen 3 PMAGs, both 5 and 20. No issues. It's visibly getting real long for the mag, but never even thinks about dragging, etc.

Night Vision Did I fail the fusion test?

I am personally shocked beyond words that TheHorta has actually looked through one.

Night Vision Did I fail the fusion test?

https://www.l3harris.com/newsroom/trade-release/2022/05/l3harris-begins-production-next-generation-panoramic-night-vision It's like a GPNVG and an ENGV-B loved each other very much. See above the single thermal sensor:

Night Vision Did I fail the fusion test?

Even on the actual fusion systems (e.g. ENVG-B), there are two different sensors. They are not even designed to align properly until things are least 47 ft away* The closer you get with any system, the less they combine. Your eyes CAN totally figure out that these are the same object, and...

    History of the SR25

Um... it says HK23 not Mk23 because those are different things, and also pretty sure the Mk23 doesn't go full auto but... sure DEVGRU guy in the 90s with HK23 ETA for those that do not know: 23 is a 5.56 version of the HK21 (7.62). Yes, a few used by Delta, SEALs, and I am sure a few other...

    Airsoft for training

Not an airsoft repair type so use them stock minus normal hobby gunsmith things like replace stocks, tighten screws, mount optics etc. I don't find them at all unreliable. Like, some years back I used a gas blowback glock twice a week to stay sharp as it was hard to get to the range. I went...

    Airsoft for training

Yes for marksmanship training, and becoming familiar with administrative handling. They absolutely make airsoft bolt actions, and "gas blowback" guns that work like real self-loaders; bolt or slide moves, bolt lock works, safeties work right, etc. Do not get an AEG (automatic electric gun) for...
