    Got a good deal on a .260

Look at the barrel date to get the actual manufacture month and year. It should shoot 142 gr Sierra Match Kings great, mine does. Bed it, adjust the trigger, lap in the scope and it will out shoot you.

    Got a good deal on a .260

Great deal. Those laminated stocks bed up nicely. Use a 0.85" front and 1.35" rear pillar and it will put the bottom metal down enough to fit 5 rounds in the magazine. Enjoy.

Gunsmithing Float lightweight barrel vs. pressure point.

You can't pressure bed fiberglass stocks. They will lose the pressure overtime. Only wood (preferably reinforced), laminated, or metal stocks can actually be pressure bedded. Many aftermarket stocks have centering points at the front of the barrel channel. They are just to put the barrel in the...

Interesting problem with Surgeon 591/R action. Pics included, would like feedback.

The only people that should be messing with the camming surfaces on a custom action is the manufacturer. Good thing you called Surgeon. Let them deal with it.

Gunsmithing I'm buying a lathe....prepare for lots of stupid questions....let's get started!

Jason, A great place to start is to take some classes. You've already missed this year's at Lassen Gun Smith School's summer classes but they are definitely worth looking into. http://www.lassencollege.edu/Assets/program-pages/gunsmithing/2014%20Gunsmithing%20Summer%20Brochure.pdf You...

    Anyone seen these bullets?

Are they listing G1 or G7 BC's? Most bullets are listed as G1. You've got to get into the realm of Bryan Litz to start thinking in G7. Since these are high performance bullets the numbers quoted are probably G7, which I think are in a higher range than the BC's you usually see, which are G1...

Gunsmithing Help un-dick my chambering method

Your groups are not that bad. How is your rifle bedded? Three shots are where your rifle is sighted. A group is at least 5 shots, pay attention to the order. Bad bedding usually shows as double grouping as the action shifts in the bed. #1 here, #2 there, #3 with 1, #4 with 2, etc. Shoot some. 6...

Chad, Do you de-grease or any other rituals before putting the solder in the joint?

Gunsmithing How strong should a silver-solder joint be?

Gene, Hopefully an expert will weigh in here. We silver soldered seamless pipe into a barrel nut to make float-tubes for Highpower AR-15 builds at Lassen CC GS summer classes. The pieces need to be a really close fit. We used a couple of 1/4" square x 1mm thick pieces for the joint. It looks...

Dead on case trimmer - FANTASTIC PRODUCT!!!

Bob Lee, Does this trimmer chamfer or does it just trim the end of the case flat. Your last picture shows a deep inner chamfer. Did you do this in a separate operation? Thanks for your review.

    Gunsmithing Getting started in gunsmithing

If you're in California during the summer check out the Summer NRA Gunsmith Classes at Lassen Community College. Inexpensive and worth a lot. http://www.lassencollege.edu/Assets/program-pages/gunsmithing/2014%20Gunsmithing%20Summer%20Brochure.pdf Classes are $46 per week plus a small...

Gunsmithing Need help installing PTG DBM

You can send it out. Chad has been mentioned. GAP will also do it. Ask about lead times. I've done a few with a Dremel. Drill it out until the pillars fit. Then Dremel away at the bottom until it rattles around (get the aluminum block below the level of the pillars). Then bed the action onto...

Anyone else excited for the MDT poly mags?

MDT says not until June. Will have to see how they function/hold up. AI mags are cheap when you consider low well they work and how long they last.

What to do with 700 in .223

Check and make sure what twist rate the barrel has. Then you won't get frustrated trying to get it to shoot too heavy a bullet. Keep it as a .223, don't mess around with the bolt. Sooner or later you'll want a .223 for something. Just bed it in a decent stock, cheap B&C or Boyds' and shoot it...

    rifle stocks.. trued 700 build....

You can get a Bell & Carlson for just over $200. Either of the B&C or HS Precision's with the aluminum bedding block should still be bedded. They make an adequate working stock. Having bedded a couple of the laminated wood factory Remington stocks I know they are perfectly adequate also, just...

Gunsmithing 700 308 sps tact 'drop in' bottom metal+det mag?

The ProMag is a center, single feed magazine. It has to be to put a round high enough between the factory Remington feed rails so that the bolt can strip a round from the magazine and feed it into the chamber. (See AICS Remington stocks). An M-14 magazine is a double stack, double feed...
