Re: Pictures of my "new" lathe!! Thanks for all the replies. I will have to look into the set-tru chucks, but I will just be doing my own projects from time to time so if might be a little much for what I need. StrictlyRum- I am not a machinist, I’m actually just a mechanical engineering...

Ok I know its not the best, but here is my "new" lathe. It is a Jet 13x40. I am still missing a lot of decals but they are on back order and they do not make it work better. Now its time to start making some chips!!

which best 1 on quality on electic powder thrower?

Re: which best 1 on quality on electic powder thrower? I have had the Lyman DP2 and the RCBS. I put them to a test on the; 26 grs varget the same speed, 50 grs varget RCBS was faster, 80 grs varget Rcbs was much faster. I hated the 30min wait time, the RCBS didn't have a wait time and was...

Gunsmithing question from a newbie about an action

Re: question from a newbie about an action No they are not all the same. Don’t quote me on this but I think the Howa is the same pitch as the vanguard which is 1.5mm which is metric. Remington, weatherbys, and most of the others use English like 16 tpi, 18 tpi, ect. But your smith should be...

Gunsmithing question from a newbie about an action

Re: question from a newbie about an action Yes you can use the long action for the 308 since the bolt face is the same for 308 and 30-06. Most people like the short actions but I have shot a few times from both long and short 308s and I think they both work.

Rem 700 SPS 30-06 heavy barrel

Re: Rem 700 SPS 30-06 heavy barrel I have never seen a SPS 30-06 Heavy Barrel, but I haven't seen lots of stuff people have on here. I would buy a heavy 308 take off, have it put on, and shoot it. When, if, your groups open up have it rechambered to 30-06.

    Gunsmithing Lathe size

Re: Lathe size I got an atlas 12" for $500 about 4 months ago. I sold it because the spindle was only .75 through and couldn't do much with guns. I have seen a few good deals but a lot of those lathes turn out to be junk.

    Choate Ultimate Rifle Stock Series

Re: Choate Ultimate Rifle Stock Series I have three of these stocks; one sniper on a 22-250, one varmint on 308, and varmint on 223. I like them since I got them for about $110 each on a few forums. I had to work a little to get the fit I wanted but nothing to much. I really like the varmint...

Re: Choate Ultimate Varmint and Badger DBM A smith I was at a few years ago had one on display that he had done. It looked nice but if I remembered he wanted a lot more to mill it out.

    Gunsmithing Lathe size

Re: Lathe size So its been a super long (ok just 3 years) wait, but a friend told me that he had one of his lathes ready to sell to me!! I think its a 14x40 or 13x40 Jet metal lathe. I know its not the best but it is a good price and I can start doing some of the projects I have been...

5.56 case length with bullet problems now!

Re: 5.56 case length I made my own drop tube out of an old pen body. It is about 5" in length and works great. I have not tried to seat a bullet yet but the powder is about 1/8 to 3/16 lower than without using the tube.

5.56 case length with bullet problems now!

Re: 5.56 case length Ok I cleaned my seating die and it made it much better (there was some stuff in it). I also forgot I just got a x-die set from midway in last week( I ordered it February 12th) so I took the seater out of it and tried it. It seems even better, but it leaves a scratch on...

5.56 case length with bullet problems now!

Re: 5.56 case length Thanks deisel Dang I was hoping you were not going to say that! I have about 26 lbs of varget that I use for the 22-250 and was going to use it for the 223 and 308 also. I was wondering if that is why hornady does not go that high on the varget charge in their book but...

Re: 5.56 case length Thanks for the quick reply! I now have another problem!! I trimmed the cases and started to measure powder for working up a load. Buy the way I am using Hornady BTHP 68gr, LC07 brass, cci 400, and Varget. I started at 24 grs and went up by .2 but when I got to 24.4 grs...
