Gunsmithing Sonoran desert institute gunsmithing degree

Re: Sonoran desert institute gunsmithing degree I have purchased the entire course of the Sonoran and Modern Gunsmithing School at gunshows. Sonoran is totally lame, you will learn just as much if not more purchasing Roy Dunlaps "Gunsmithing" and reading it. The Modern course is a little more...

Gunsmithing My first time cutting on a gun (barrel threading)

Re: My first time cutting on a gun (barrel threading) Looks good but I did notice a bit of chatter on the thread relief. Spindle speed a touch fast(gear down as slow as possible) and I would ditch the cutoff tool method-too much tool flex. Better to grind a HSS tool for doing reliefs. I...

Gunsmithing Treat a New Garand Stock

Re: Treat a New Garand Stock BLO First couple of coats cut 100% with Turpentine. Allow at least a day between coats, longer if you can. After the two coats plain BLO rubbed in with the heel of your hand. Be sure to chase off the excess otherwise it will get gummy.

Gunsmithing needs of scope ring lapping ?

Re: needs of scope ring lapping ? I align the rings if 2 pc and then "print" them to check contact patterns. If it looks the least questionable they get lapped. Quality rings rarely need it. I feel that incorrect torqueing of the rings is responsible for more issues than unlapped rings.

    Gunsmithing Barrel Break in procedure

Re: Barrel Break in procedure Take the time to read the "Stickied" thread at the top of this section titled "Objective research on barrel break in". Really good read that lays it out very well.

    Gunsmithing Bedding compounds

Re: Bedding compounds Devcon all the way. The steel content gives it great shock resistance yet is not brittle. A bit on the stiff side but can be worked into crevices, great adhesion. The only drawback is it has so much steel in it it can rust. I have heard (but cannot substantiate) of...

    Gunsmithing barrel threading question

Re: barrel threading question If you just spin a standard die down it you stand a good chance of cutting the threads undersize. If your going to use a die use an adjustable die opened up and slowly adjust it until you get the fit you want. Best bet is to pick them up on a lathe.

    Gunsmithing Barrel Threading Question ?

Re: Barrel Threading Question ? Barrel should not need to be pulled. At 26" it will pass through the headstock of a 13/40 lathe with plenty to spare. I can thread though the headstock as short as 18" and if for some reason it won't pass through then I work between centers. It really boils...

Gunsmithing 1911 FTE and failure to lock slide

Re: 1911 FTE and failure to lock slide Easy fix. Smash the damn thing with a 16# sledge. A standard extractor will not fit, Taurus uses a proprietary cut on the firing pin block section and a standard extractor will not retain the plunger/spring. Taurus is rife with this kind of crap. As far...

Gunsmithing Gunsmith might have fouled my Surefire Flash Hider

Re: Gunsmith might have fouled my Surefire Flash Hider Piss poor craftsmanship and incorrect weld process used. No excuse to run the weld to the barrel. Another fine job by "Buzz Box Barney". Dress it up and it will be fine.

    Gunsmithing AR detent spring modification

Re: AR detent spring modification Cute trick but unneeded. Just "dogleg" the spring like a 1911 plunger spring. Simple, fast and the price is right.

    Gunsmithing Drill bit source

Re: Drill bit source You know I picked up a relatively cheap set of Ti coated bits from Harbor Fright in a pinch and as long as you run a good oil and know how to keep a bit sharp they will hold you over until you can afford a quality index. Enco is where I picked up my "good bits". 200.00...

    Gunsmithing release agent for bedding?

Re: release agent for bedding? As far as clean up the Johnsons Paste wax washes right off with mineral spirits, laquer thinner and such. Scrub with a nylon bristle brush or 1" paint brush with the bristles cut to about 1/2" long. When it drys you may see a little powdery residue but it just...

    Gunsmithing release agent for bedding?

Re: release agent for bedding? I like Johnsons paste furniture wax. 2 coats, allowed to dry between each coat and buffed with a toothbrush or similar to clean it out of nooks and crannys. Right before bedding/buttering I shoot a light coat of Spray-On Silicon mold release. Slicker than...

Gunsmithing i made this stock ! feedback plz

Re: i made this stock ! feedback plz Very nice work. I as well have thought about a lam stock using tight grained marine or aviation ply. You have a talent with wood. The heat required to melt silver solder will burn the wood plus you have to undercut the inlay to give the solder something...
