It has 2 real operating limitations:
1. Distance: It gives ballistic corrections out to around 1100 yds, so that is the furthest you can possibly shoot with it. It also doesn't give Coriolis corrections, so you have to just hold high or low depending on which direction you're facing for longer...
Bigger tubes can improve brightness and resolution, if you use the additional internal space for larger diameter lensing. It's just that generally what you find in larger diameter tubes is thicker tube wall and more void.
Kahles was selling the Gen IIIs at $2500 before they discontinued them. Are they good scopes? Sure. Are they obsolete? I don't think so. They track well, and are pretty clean optically between 12-15x.

The red line is the end of the upper receiver. The bottom of the yellow tape (tape measure laid across the optics) is where the forward bolt on the Area 419 mount lands.
