New Contest Starting Now! This Target Haunts Me
Tell us about the one that got away, the flier that ruined your group, the zero that drifted, the shot you still see when you close your eyes. Winner will receive a free scope!
I love hunting on a drizzly morning.
Hunting with two monkeys makes it a bit challenging to be serious hunting, though I wouldn't trade it for anything!
Definitely some advantage on a standard cartridge if you travel.
As mentioned, one nice thing on the 280AI is that you can run 280 Rem which is fairly easy to find.
good advice as well..
too light of a barrel is a pain to work up loads for..
I had a Sako 85 Finlight 270 and it would start flinging them after 3 rounds even with a 1 minute cool off.
Yes, first round out of a cold bore is the most crucial thing for a hunting rifle..
But still a pain.
My light...
When you say "better hunting rifle" I take it to mean you want something that shoots flatter and in a lighter package than your existing 308.
Correct?
FWIW:
I love the 308 and will always have one.
But I do like for fast action hunting a flatter round. I run a 250 yard zero, with the 140g...

I ditched my 270 for a 280 AI
Mine is a Nosler with a Pacnor lightweight 24" barrel.
I think it gives a little more versatility.
Both caliber a work well obviously and inside say 350 yard make no real difference.
But from 400 out the higher BC 7mm pills help.
The new .277 Nosler 150 LRAB...
He tried to get on a clean shot 3 times that morning but wouldn't pull the trigger unless it was he felt he had a good shot.
Deer was small but that's on me.
We need to thin out a bunch of does so I guess it doesn't really matter.
Gotta do what you gotta do
I would love to live in the mountains and be ar to spot and stalk.
Every place has its pros and cons.
I get to hunt wild hogs year round with no limits however I want 24x7 !
Have you considered a entry level thermal such as a Flir Scout 32 for detection?
I tested one for a few months last spring for hog hunting, sure makes finding them a LOT easier than even good Gen 3 NVG.
178 AMAX
Been loading for 308s for a long time and have tried just about everything out there.
The 178 AMAX is very accurate, deadly and cheap.
Runs great out of my 20" 308
I have a Nosler 280AI
I think you are going to need slower powder than H4831Sc
I hunt with 140 accubonds and tried a load last week with the new 150
Long range ABs (.611 BC)
Running 59.5-60.3 g of H4831sc I was only getting 2800 FPS at 500ft above sea level
I think I need to go to a slower powder
I can attest to the glass diffence
The Steiner Military 1-5 is right there with my S&B
The MTAC is a great entry level scope and a fantastic bargain.
I really like the Stenier 1-5
True 1× and "Aimpoint bright" 1MOA dot
