New Contest Starting Now! This Target Haunts Me
Tell us about the one that got away, the flier that ruined your group, the zero that drifted, the shot you still see when you close your eyes. Winner will receive a free scope!
Shoot, makes me wish I took a closer look at the KET brass deflector rather than taking the multicam handbag off the prize table ?
The above discussion on best practices definitely deserves a discussion on its own.
I noticed 224V 90 gr FGMM has become available again at places like Target Sports USA. Any idea if this is new production stuff? And if so how has it been performing ?
@Swoodhouse19 Any chance I could sleep in my truck at the range the night before the match? If so, is there a certain time I need to arrive by?
Thank you for the hard work in putting this together. Looking forward to shooting at Avenal again.
I have a couple of coworkers who have both guns. I have put a few rounds through each. The X5 has a softer recoil impulse and less muzzle flip due to the added weight. I haven’t put both on a timer to quantify split differences however. For a range gun, the X5 would be the better choice. If you...
Ah I see. Like Precision Underground suggested, I find I’m more consistent on a 1” square target than small dot (I personally like the free Larue target with four 2”/1” squares). I find I’m able to quarter it more consistently.
A buddy of mine also suggested dialing elevation a little up or...
I think it’s useful for what it is—an economical compact observation device with some ranging features. Can be had for under $100 through their Mil/LE discount onExpert Voice. Kyle Defoor says he has used one as a spotter for his scoped carbine classes.
I found it had a touch less...
@McReef Did you adjust your diopter on your scope to properly focus the reticle? I think you should be able to see the center dot clearly if the diopter is set. It’ll be a huge thing to not have to struggle with.
That’s a good looking gun. You should see my ghetto rigged AR15.
Here’s an example of what Precision Underground is talking about recoil management/absorption:
Phil Velayo shooting a big caliber rifle. He says each shot knocked the wind out of him, but the rifle still moves straight back. You can see the energy wave move down his body.
Matter of fact I have spent a quite a bit of ammo documenting my offsets from different positions at 100 yards with my .224 V semi. The gun from prone is around .75 MOA at 100.
The following POI offsets in mils are in relation to dead center of the target:
-Prone = .1 U / .1 L
-Balanced on...
I think it might depend if it’s bolt or semi auto. All semi’s I’ve shot off tripod had POI shift.
My Craddock Precision 224V upper with RRS plate direct mounted into an RRS Tripod has a .3 mil shift low compared to prone.
Craddock Precision would be a good option. Pricing for complete upper is between JP and Larue prices.
Mine is averaging 3/4 MOA with factory Hornady 88’s.
My experience with a precision semi is mostly on a 20” 224V upper built by Craddock Precision around a medium-heavy Bartlein barrel.
It averages 3/4 MOA with factory 88 grain Hornady Match. I’ve been shooting it a ton lately. When the gun gets dirty (around 350-400 rounds from last thorough...
It doesn’t take much pressure to change POI depending on the upper. On a couple of standard uppers, when I use sling support (not even super tight) I definitely see a low hit compared to the called shot (about 1.5 MOA low).
Thanks for the reply.
I wonder how much of the accuracy improvement was due to bedding the barrel as well?
I didn’t true the receiver face (from DSG arms), but I bedded my 16” light weight Lothar Walther blem barrel (5.56 chamber) with Loctite 271 (red). I saw approximately a 20% increase...
I saw the same article in person at my local Barnes and Nobel on Saturday. I highly doubt they would spend that much time, $, and effort on (what would be) a humorless April Fools joke.
I do find it odd that there is no mention of it anywhere else. I totally thought this would be the first...
