    Gunsmithing Barrel runout question

There’s way too many variables to calculate this. Every barrel is different. Depending on how the barrel is held in the lathe, it may be being bent between chucks/spiders to force a reeding that may not be reality in the free state. Working between chucks/spiders, one may think they have .040”...

    Gunsmithing Barrel runout question

If you read the internet, one would think the bore would run out a few inches because these barrel makers have no idea how to gun drill a deep hole…

    Action receiver/barrel thread length

Regarding that K31 shank pictures above, that follows pretty much my thoughts. BUT, I think it would need to be a light interference fit or greater for it to make a real “RTZ”. The fit would need to be interference, yet be allowed to be assembled/disassembled with the threaded portion. My...

To thread or not to thread?

Finally someone that shoots as much as I do! But in all seriousness, threading ihe muzzle should not decrease the accuracy. May even increase it if a new crown is cut.

    Action receiver/barrel thread length

I know this is an old thread, but I came across it google searching for something else. Regarding that stress analysis above, I would assume that is based on the fastener being tensioned to about 80% of the yield strength. I am curious what the analysis would look like with a typical barrel...

    Rechambering?

Throw it in the gutter and go buy another.

    Issue with throat depth

Like Mr. Cross said, it’s likely a worn reamer resulting in a freebore diameter smaller than the bullet. I find it hard to believe a builder would use a reamer spec’d with a freebore that won’t chamber factory FGMM unless specifically requested. Either way, I’d expect the builder to resolve it...

Gunsmithing Barrel thread and shoulder machining?

That is some bullshit. No, that is NOT how threads come out sometimes if you are doing it right. That is a set-up and tooling problem, not a material problem.

Gunsmithing How do you cut this angle.

On a manual lathe, a boring bar can be used for the chamber pre-bore (if you’re into that sort of thing), counterbore, counterbore chamfer, chamber chamfer/edge break, and then run your spindle in reverse and chamfer the OD on the backside. One tool, one compound setup.

    Barrel threaded length

Double check your die diameter as stated in the OP!

    Barrel threaded length

Thread the die on until it hard stops. Give it four more turns, bam, .200” more threads than were there before.

    Barrel threaded length

He’s got 1.3” of established thread. I fail to see how adding an additional .200 of threads with a die is going to hurt anything. Hell, it would probably be more accurate than someone trying to dial the existing threads dead nuts in a lathe and chasing them. Now the why part, that’s up to him.

    Zealot Rifle Chassis by KMW

A very well thought out and designed chassis from the maker of the best looking stock (Sentinel) out there. Can’t wait to see what the comp version brings!

    Stainless Barrel Bore-Scope Discovery

Or some of us look at hundreds of barrels a year with a bore scope and understand what may look a bit sketchy under high magnification, and a potentially distorted view, very well could be completely insignificant on target.

    Stainless Barrel Bore-Scope Discovery

It absolutely amazes me how well rifles shot before Chinese borescopes were in every shooters hands….

Help with muzzle threads on a expensive custom barrel

The The major diameter was machines too small. But it’s pretty apparent, even to the naked eye. Even if a shop doesn’t gauge every thread on a proven program, that one is hard to miss visually.

Help with muzzle threads on a expensive custom barrel

The builder hasn’t even been made aware of the issue, nor been given the opportunity to correct it. Probably no need to toss the builder under the bus at this point.

Help with muzzle threads on a expensive custom barrel

Don’t waste any more time worrying about the pitch diameter. The major diameter is .012”-.013” under spec. Send it back for a replacement.

Prefit Barrel Won't Screw onto Action

Why is it easy to set up If you could get it EXACTLY where you wanted it the first time, I am still failing to see how you couldn't get it right back there? And the thread profile and pitch is not changing not changing. Taking a few+ thousands of pitch off in a second set-up should look...
