    Ackley Improved Rifles

The term "swipe marks" is a sign of an over pressure condition. At such high pressure the brass from the head of the case will actually flow into the ejector hole in the face of the bolt. When the bolt is opened the slight bump of brass is shaved off leaving a shiny circle or a "swipe mark" on...

How to Move a Safe (1000 lbs.)

I've moved my safes around the house using golf balls, sounds silly but it works great. It's easy to turn corners or spin the safe.

    Hornady modified case thread

You can send a piece of your fired brass to Hornady Mfg. and they will thread it and send it back to you for $15. I just did this for my 6.5-06 Ackley.

    Accuracy vs. Standard deviation

Am I getting to rapped up in the search for ultimate accuracy with my 6.5-06 Ackley Improved build? I've tried a few powders with the 139 Scenar, Retumbo, H1000, IMR7828 and Ramshot magnum. With all these powders the rifle shoots under an inch at 100 yards. H1000 shows the best accuracy...

Length of Pull How important is it. Mine is 15 7/8" and I cannot find a stock

I like my LOP to be around 14 1/2 so I just use a Limb saver slip on and cut fillers to get the length I want. It's quick and dirty and doesn't require a lot of work and it's not permanent.

    My new 6.5 build

Here is the completed project. I have been fire forming brass is the shop with the cream of wheat method and that is working very well. Now it's time to work up some loads, starting with Retumbo and H1000. I will be using 139gr. Scenars to start with. If anybody has any load data they would like...

Gunsmithing Torque spec for FTE Brake

The screw in the FTE is a 10-32 x 1/2" that uses a 5/32 key. A torque spec chart from federal screw products calls for 29.7 in/lbs for a carbon steel screw. That's just for what the screw it self is good for but that does not take in to consideration the clamp application. It's just a number...

Gunsmithing Torque spec for FTE Brake

It looks like quarter turn is about 65 in/lbs. I have Seekonk T-Handle 65 in/lb torque wrench that I use on my action and scope rings. I paid attention to where the screw started to snug up and the location of the handle, it snapped over at about a quarter turn. I'm still going to call again...

Gunsmithing Torque spec for FTE Brake

I just had a Badger FTE brake installed and there was no note on the recommended torque value for the clamp screw. I called Badger but they are closed for the week, they are all at the shot show. Anybody know what that number is? Thanks

    AI Mags for 30-06?

I'm running accurate 300 win mags with 6.5-06 Ackley bighorn action so a can add a couple of thoughts here. First is a duck bill vise grip works extremely well to bend the feed lips to work and second I called and talked to a fellow at accurate magazines about this very topic. I saw an ad for...

    My new 6.5 build

I have an appointment for next Monday morning 9am with my machinist. He said we will be able to complete this build in two days. If there is any load data for 6.5-06 or 6.5-06 Ackley I would like to see it. This has been in the works for 2 years and I am driving about 1300 miles to see him and...

    Gunsmithing Chambering question

Hello, I just picked up my Surgeon 591 from the gunsmith, he put the fourth barrel on it and it's a 6.5 Creedmoor. I was looking things over in his shop and when I was checking out the bolt it appeared that the ejector had not been removed. He said he doesn't take it out when he cuts the...
