Care And Feeding Of A GAP 6.5 SAUM.....

I've found mine shoots the 140 HYbrid better than 140 Accubonds. Suprised the 139 Lapua wouldn't shoot and I'm surprised a GAP barrel would shoot anything 3". Try the 140 hybrid load but you might want to call them.

    New scope cap introduction

Rather than make the arms spring loaded with machined parts, you could make them out of heavy duty rubber (like rubber bungee strap material). Less cost and easier to make. It would probably hold the cap snug enough (provided you had the inner ridge you mentioned) you wouldn't need anything...

Sidearms & Scatterguns 40 S&W over 41 Mag for Grizzly Bear Protection?

355 Sigfan, good advice. Some of my buddies around here have started carrying Glock 10mm for the same reasons. I've considered it too, as I put about 3k-4k rounds a year, through a G34. For various reasons some of them are now selling them. Totally agree that shot placement is key, I've heard...

Sidearms & Scatterguns 40 S&W over 41 Mag for Grizzly Bear Protection?

I live in MT near G Bears. If you are going hunting in the lower 48, count yourself lucky if you see one, they are rare even for those that live in MT, ID, WY etc. They are fantastic creatures. If one charges you, and you don't spot it before it takes off, you probably won't even clear leather...

New GAP Extreme Hunter in 6.5 SAUM

Tikka 6.5 SAUM I got my re-barrel job back last week and thought I'd post the results here. I had a Tikka 300 WSM re-barreled in 6.5 SAUM with a 24", #3 contour barrel, 8.70 twist. Chamber was cut by Francis Kuehl, who did a phenomenal job (more on that later). <a...

New GAP Extreme Hunter in 6.5 SAUM

That sounds like a barrel or load problem to me but you might want to try a 140 hybrid or 139 scenar if you haven't. It's usually very easy to find a good load with those.

New GAP Extreme Hunter in 6.5 SAUM

VYD, have wondered this as well. I shot with George Gardiner at the 2013 SHC, it obviously wasn't a big deal as he won and I''m pretty sure he shot the SAUM.

New GAP Extreme Hunter in 6.5 SAUM

Wow, that is great info. I've often wondered what it was like hunting there, and that is completely different than hunting here. In MT shots can range from 25y to 1000y (limited by the obvious factors). The average shot I've taken over the last 7 years has been 300-400y, some out to 500+...

New GAP Extreme Hunter in 6.5 SAUM

Sorry msalm, I didn't even mention Barnes in my response and agree with everything you said. I have had amazing terminal performance from Barnes bullets, and have never heard anything but good things around here in terms of how they perform on game. However, I moved away from them because the...

New GAP Extreme Hunter in 6.5 SAUM

George, I'm hearing some anecdotal stories around here that indicate hunters are not happy with the Accubond LR. Hearing they are blowing up at short distances, and that they are designed to open quickly at distance and not for game within 400 y. I will see the Nosler folks next week in Bend...

New GAP Extreme Hunter in 6.5 SAUM

I like it. Two downsides, the action screws can only be tightened down to approx 20lbs or it will cause the mag to stick. 2nd is the fore end is very wide, so a stock Tikka barrel looks tiny in there. Its a tad heavy at 3lbs, about 1lbs heavier than the OEM Tikka stock. Its priced right at...

New GAP Extreme Hunter in 6.5 SAUM

Greywolf - see my posts. I am building a tikka 6.5 SAUM. Not back yet though, and I used a Mountain Tactical stock made here in MT. Whidden had 6.5 FL bushing dies, just bought some last week.

New GAP Extreme Hunter in 6.5 SAUM

Schmi - I sent them a t3. They said they would do it but warned me that there was a lot of things that they would normally do that they could not with a Tikka, is trueing etc. It is what it is. But they will re-barrel it, and I'm thankful that they are willing to take it on. I think the max...
