Hunting for a repo M40 walnut stock (my Beaver156 repo stock got slightly damaged)

Thank you, that is much appreciated. I was considering it - when another collector reached out to me with an offer I simply couldn't refuse. He had an original Remington PSS stock (late 1980s/early 90s) with the correct metal and its in great shape. It cost me more than the Beaver56 stock, but...

Hunting for a repo M40 walnut stock (my Beaver156 repo stock got slightly damaged)

My local gunsmith building my repo M40 "shooter" accidentally dropped my repo M40 stock on his shop floor...and the toe broke-off at the screw. Opps. If this had been an original M40 stock I'd be teary-eyed about it, but it's just a Beaver156 (eBay) repo stock, so I'm not upset about it...

It's been fun, but it's time for me to move on

Gosh. I don’t know what to say. So, I’ll call this weekend to catch-up, and thanks for letting us know. I’ll just say that I respect your expert knowledge, very much admire your personal generosity, and have “vicariously” enjoyed looking at your collection for many years. More importantly, I...

    Mk 13 Mod 0 stock

Never seen a UID tag for ammo on a rifle. The Federal ammo would have been Mk 248 Mod 1. I would only expect the UID tag on perhaps a full pallet of such ammo, as the value is supposed to be $5k or more, but perhaps it also applies to “consumable” ammo? Anyhow, who knows how it ended up on that...

    M70 ish

Example of load development I did back in 2017 when I finished my pre-64 M70 build with vintage 10x and Douglas barrel. It made a huge difference…. Just say’n. 1 shot went low and to the right, but the other 4 shots made me smile: YMMV, but I suggest load development if you aren’t happy...

    Early vs. Late M40A1's

The date was 1968 when the long shroud was introduced...here's some history that shows a lot of changes in 1968-69: https://www.americanrifleman.org/content/remington-s-model-700-the-first-50-years/ • A magazine charging notch in the front of the Model 721 receiver bridge was carried over to...

M40 sling swivel build, a ask for help

It’s a vintage 40-X receiver (supposedly circa 1969-70), so it came clip-slotted from the factory, along with a 27.5” SS heavy barrel.

    Early vs. Late M40A1's

I will only add that when the USMC/PWS started ordering new M700 receivers from Remington, I think they were ordered with new bolts as well. I understand the first such order was in 1992 and these were the 99 “C” prefix M700 receivers that were built into M40A1s. Obviously all those bolts would...

M40 sling swivel build, a ask for help

Nice job! I know how you feel. I have spent silly amounts of time and effort in the evenings restoring hobby-related items that most guys would overlook or baulk at restoring. If you can spare one of your perfected loops, please let me know. My M40 replica is likely being built this month by a...

M40 sling swivel build, a ask for help

Your dimensions are slightly too big, but pretty close. Here’s my Remington M40 “Chuck Mawhinney” commemorative stock, which should be correct, to my knowledge: Hope that helps. If you have an extra loop you can spare for a few dollars, please send me a PM, as I was given an ad hoc...

    Quantico T48 Trial Rifles

I’d really like to visit that vault one day. The author Frank Iannamico has been there and wrote an excellent book, The U.S. M14 Rifle: The Last Steel Warrior (2018). Excerpts re T48: Note picture caption: Just some random info re those T48s in storage.

U.S. marked clip slotted 40x action?

Not to pile on, but the two Remington clip-slotted receivers I have are flat at the rear of the slot. Looking more closely at the OP receiver - it is a slightly ‘concave’ or curved shape at the back. That’s not what I would expect. Here’s my vintage 40-X clip slot for comparison:

U.S. marked clip slotted 40x action?

I will only note that PTG’s ad hoc laser engraving of “US” and “M24” is well-done, but it’s not perfect. A close examination shows the font PTG uses is a little different/deeper relative to the original Remington stamping. Nice 40-X action for sure, but it’s not a left-over military item.

Replica of an 'improvised M14A1' sniper rifle as used by the US Army LLRP, circa 1967

FWIW, the other inspiration for my replica project is Chuck Karan’s improvised M14A1 sniper rifle that he carried in Vietnam circa 1970-71. I think it’s still on display at the West Point museum. It’s also seen in Peter Senich’s book, The Long-Range War: Snipping in Vietnam. (Karwan passed away...

    M40 New Manufacture Stock

Yes, he sure did. As seen in post #66, I have a correct M40 stock off a Chuck Mawhinney M40 rifle, but here's what I don't have: 1. An indoor woodworking area where I can create a massive level saw dust - as about 1/4 of wood has to removed from the sides and belly of forend. (We have several...

    M40 New Manufacture Stock

Not sure, but I suspect a cheap 3-9x40mm with 1/4 click adjustments and Duplex reticle. I have only one of the green anodized Leupold M40 commemorative scopes which I have on my Chuck Mawahinny rifle (w/ Mil-Dot reticle), and will keep that scope on that rifle. I would like something green, but...

    M40 New Manufacture Stock

Looks like my Beaver156 stock will be bedded to the action this winter. Just wish I knew how to expertly contour the forend so it’s more of the skinny profile of the original M40 stocks. Vintage 40-X repeater donor action already factory clip-slotted. The currently mounted heavy SS 40-X, 27.5”...

Replica of an 'improvised M14A1' sniper rifle as used by the US Army LLRP, circa 1967

Thanks, it was indeed a fun project that fits my collection interests. The old stock is neat. Digressing somewhat, but the 3-9X ART scopes came along a little later than the optic set-up I showed. Per Peter Senich’s excellent book, The Long-Range War, the AWC + M84 scope system was first sent...

Replica of an 'improvised M14A1' sniper rifle as used by the US Army LLRP, circa 1967

Inspiration for this retro Vietnam era M14 project was information written by then First Lieutenant Louis Garavaglia on the right, who wrote the following article for the January 1968 issue of American Rifleman magazine. Mr. Garavaglia is still around (long retired) and I contacted him via email...

    Parker Hale M82 Clone

I personally don't know what reticle the Canadian M82 used, but I did find this info re Australian and New Zealand militaries; https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parker-Hale_M82 ...and on this Canadian website - post #648 the member indicated that he has a ZF-69 in the proper serial number block...
