    M84 scope

The M84 is a very primitive scope that was designed in 1944, and is best used for only vintage rifles like the M1D or maybe a Korean era M1903A4. I once owned a repo M84 scope but sold it and got a real M84 for my M1D project. They are only 2.2X power and were severely outdated by the...

Possible Van Orden M70 Target rifle

Nice looking rifle. I like that patina. You are likely already aware, but anyhow, per DFA, volume 1 pages 41-42. S/N 254524 was sold in 12/53 to E.A. Fyre in Toledo, Ohio. My guess he was a civilian, as sales to military personnel went to various military bases/Forts. S/N 374530 does not show...

    Lets see your USMC M40-M40A6!!!

The USMC tested various chassis systems in the early 201Xs to replace the glass-bedded/labor intensive McMillan stocks, so I think the answer is 'no' if you are asking that question. There was no interest in glass-bedding more USMC sniper rifles in the early 201Xs - it was all about a chassis...

    IDF Nimrod scope

Having researched M14 military optics, here’s my 2cts. The 6x Nimrod scopes were introduced by the IDF in the "mid-1980s," and were used for about a decade. The original Wild Herrbrugg 4x scopes were used previously on M14s - from the mid-1970s to the mid-1980s. (Note: the Wild Herrbrugg 4x...

Buddy just snagged these... what can you guys tell me about them?

Here's a picture of a very early Model 70 from 1936 or 1937. I recall that it has a 4 digit serial number (It's not my rifle). This is how those early barrels are marked: ".30 GOV T'06". I don't know when they changed the font, but it was like post-WWII. I'll guess that the calibers were...

Rem 700 Custom Shop, 762x51, Stainless heavy barrel in AICS chassis w Leupold Scope that was modified by Premiere Optics which is no longer open

Thanks, a green or tan generation 1 stock would nice to find. I have all the parts for a 6.5 Creedmoor build w/ an M700 receiver, and a couple AI mags...

Rem 700 Custom Shop, 762x51, Stainless heavy barrel in AICS chassis w Leupold Scope that was modified by Premiere Optics which is no longer open

Here's all I think one can discern. I think the "BO" stamped on the barrel is Remington's build date. (post #6, picture # 4) My guess is B = 2007, and O = July. (I think the "AT" might be the initials of Remington's inspector who did the final inspection of that rifle). Deciphering info...

Historical question, why doesn't a bolt gun that takes 30-06 en bloc clips exist?

Not to be flippant, but the enbloc was utilized b/c the M1 is a semi-auto action and operates with enough force to pull and load the next round from the enbloc clip. It was also a way to stuff 8 rds into the rifle without a protruding magazine. Bolt actions are simple & don't need the enbloc...

Is Lapua 170gr Lock Base ammo used by British snipers (L96A1)?

VihtaVuori's accuracy load with the 170grain Lockbase is listed as 45.5 grains of N140, which is also their MAX charge weight, so I'll work up a load starting at 44.0 grains, and I'll try Varget at 44.0 too. Max velocity listed as 2696 fps (822 m/s), so that is a more moderate load than the...

Rem 700 Custom Shop, 762x51, Stainless heavy barrel in AICS chassis w Leupold Scope that was modified by Premiere Optics which is no longer open

Premier Reticles changed reticles as requested. An old Leupold like that might have had a Duplex reticle, and the late Dick Thomas (owner of Premier) would change it out for a Mil-Dot or other reticles. So whatever reticle that scope has it in now...that was likely a replacement reticle and not...

Is Lapua 170gr Lock Base ammo used by British snipers (L96A1)?

Thanks for that info. I went through 100 of the 170gr Lockbase bullets and never got a good recipe. I still have 300 left, so hoping to find something that works. You might be right about the speed preference, as I was loading very moderate loads. Just wish I could find out what the factory...

My TKiv85 reproduction just got a huge boost.

Congrats on getting that issued stock(!). That is going to be a very nice example when done. I've never seen that scope case, but looks like a neat accessory. I saved this picture which shows the various permutations (none of this is my mine, but I liked this picture). Good luck finishing it(!).

Is Lapua 170gr Lock Base ammo used by British snipers (L96A1)?

Ok, so that ammo has 44.9 grains of powder? Looking at the VihtaVuori book, that charge weight could be N140, M540, N150 or maybe N550. The only Viht powder that could provide 860 m/s velocity (2820 fps) would appear to N550. However, you'd need more than 44.9 grains of N550 to reach that...

    Winchester 70 target rifle

Years ago at the QSC vintage precision rifle match, a shooting buddy brought his pre-64 M70 to the match (w/ large profile 26" barrel). He made a "custom" cheek rest for it to suit his cheek position (and increased the LOP)... It seems that some duct tape was required.

The Leupold/Redfield "M40 Commemorative" scopes made back in the early to mid-201X era came with Mil-Dots from the factory. Mine is marked "369 of 1000", so I presume 1000 of these scopes were made back then. Primarily marketed for the SSA M40 replicas that were made a few years earlier. (My...

Changing the mounting rings on the Malcolm-HiLux 8x USMC sniper scope

All I can offer is try Kroil oil when you go to remove the original screws. We updated the soft Chinese screws on my Malcolm 8x scope a few years ago, and I recall that one broke off in the mount…

    Vintage Sniper Rifle Picture Thread

Back in 2015 when me and one of my shooting buddies got our new M40 replicas from Marty (BO owner), we took them to a Quantico Shooting Club vintage precision rifle match. The match is 300 and 600 yards on Saturday, and 800 to 1000 yards on Sunday. We had no issues at 300 and 600 yards, but...

    The Clone

This is confusing. McMillian Fiberglass Stocks only makes fiberglass stocks, as used on the M40A1 (1980s-90s era) thru M40A6 (201X era) A pre-64 Winchester Model 70 is generally a wooden stocked rifle, so don't know why a McMillan stock would be a consideration if a "replica" of a USMC sniper...
