Poor IRL performance of the 68 grain .223 BTHP

Moving to a faster expanding bullet pushed faster is what you need. Some flavor of the 53-60 gr VMAX or Varmageddon will be your friend. The 53 VMAX has the best BC of the bunch but is not as accurate in some barrels. Your 68 gr bullets likely do expand but not fast enough to anchor a small...

    Third bolt release on AR-15

+2 on evaluating how much the BCG over-runs the bolt catch... If the BCG has too much over-run (IE gap between BCG face and bolt catch at its rearmost extent of travel), there is a very high chance to break them prematurely. This is an affliction that tends to affect any AR with a heavier...

    155's in a 308 gas gun

I wouldn't say you are "stuck" with the IMR 4895... It does have some temperature sensitivity but is forgiving to load with wide nodes, is not "peaky," and generates good velocity.

    155's in a 308 gas gun

After shooting a few different combinations in gas guns over the years, I also have come to prefer 150-155 gr class loads in AR platforms. I have not had any adverse pressure signs, nor premature barrel wear. It seems easier on brass too. Either IMR 4895 or H4895 both work very well. I have...

Night Vision Pixels on Target Voodoo-B handheld

+3 on the above considerations. A lot of these military thermal spotters are designed with other features, IE GPS location, rangefinding, tactical system integration, etc. If you just need good image quality and an usable reticle the way to go is a high quality BAE core civilian unit. You will...

Trouble extracting the last component in an integral suppressor.

You need alternating heat and cold. Not a lot, but freeze it then heat the outer tube gently. Have you considered dipping it something like carb cleaner, or using a ultrasonic cleaner? I have cans that are user serviceable that I use on rimfire, and they get gummed up quite quickly. My advice...

    Vihtavouri Powders for reduced loads?

Thank for the heads up about trying the N130-series powders instead. I don't think you will get a great ES/SD with loads like this due to pressures being less than optimal for 100% combustion, but accuracy is often just fine.

    Vihtavouri Powders for reduced loads?

I am not speaking of "slightly" reduced loads... The max load for IMR 4895 in the 308 is 49+ grains, and a 60% reduced load is 30 grains. That is quite low case fill. Fortunately there were no wonky ignition issues or positional changes in velocity. Tin Star isn't made anymore and the best we...

    Vihtavouri Powders for reduced loads?

Hi All, I was recently experimenting with some reduced loads in 308 using the 125 SST using Hodgdon's "60% of maximum load" data with H4895. I have several lbs of H4895 as well as IMR 4895, but for the sake of availability I used the IMR. In short, it works great! 41 gr of IMR 4895 under a 125...

    Night Vision Budget thermal

Thermal is superior but it isn't cheap. Have you considered renting a unit? Some places will rent for $200 for several days, and you can then get a feel of what would work for you. A cheap 256 unit will be barely usable out to 100 yards, and I wouldn't recommend it.

If you got a new Remington 700 SPS Tactical what would your first changes be?

Get a SPS Tactical with a heavier barrel, or one of the Varmint heavy barrel models instead. The new fixed weight Timney is OK although no Triggertech.

Realistically Best Option for a 7.62 Gas Gun

I am a fan of LMT if thinking 308. Even their 16" chrome lined barrels are surprisingly accurate. In fact I have had better accuracy from MWS's than LMT's standard AR's. I have built a few large frame AR's, including ones with a custom McGowen barrel as well as a stainless Criterion barrel...

    Subsonics..and reducing noise level

For Red Dot and 150 gr bullets I settled on around 4.9-5.2 gr after starting at around 6-6.5 gr depending on the bullet. It was reduced until a velocity of 1000 fps was achieved. With other powders including Bullseye and N340 the charges have turned out to be surprisingly similar. I have found...

    Night Vision Voodoo-M vs xELR

The Voodoo M is superior unit to the XELR. It is smaller, the core has better sensitivity and processing, and it handles different conditions better. That being said the XELR is by no means a bad unit and it is still no slouch if you could get one for a reasonable price.

    Subsonics..and reducing noise level

There are other alternatives that can work well too... Bullseye is an example, or some of the shotgun powders. Red Dot has worked so well though I havent had to go looking for anything else (and 1 lb of powder lasts incredibly long!) I will caution you do not double charge, or drastically...

    Subsonics..and reducing noise level

If you want the ultimate in quiet - use a very fast burning pistol powder and a light bullet. A great load is a 110 Vmax with 3.8-4.0 gr of Red Dot. If you think your friends loads are quiet, this will blow your mind. Like BB gun or suppressed subsonic 22 quiet. And no it won't even come close...

    300Blk At Distance

This is an exercise in futility. Also many of suggestions here demonstrate a lack of understanding in terms of optimizing a cartridge of limited case capacity for long range use. For example, 200+ grain bullets will very significantly decrease the case capacity even if they provide a better BC...

Switch barrel Remington 700, let’s talk options,

Unless you have a talented machinist who will also work basically for free, this project has a reasonably high chance of failure. In addition it would almost certainly ending up costing more than the other proposed ideas here, even with the use of the 700 actions you already have. If it was me...

Night Vision Good scope and mount for Iray RH25 as clip on??

So even though the proper height for most clip-ons "should" be a 1.5" mount... It doesn't always work out that way. For example, a SNIPE-IR has a similar high mount to the IRay you have. For optimal centerline it actually needs to be 1.7" or so (I forgot the exact measurements). Interestingly...
