    Right or left ?

It's not just reaching that the 600°F, but also how much time it's at 600°F. I assume you're talking about Fahrenheit??? 600°F is only ~ 316°C . . . which is not enough to do any level of annealing unless is for a very long time. Annealing (or the "flash annealing" that we do) the brass...

    Right or left ?

Yes, the pencil flame is more precise, but the swirl is a little hotter and the faster I can heat up the neck the sooner I can drop the case out of the flame. And the sooner the case is out of the flame, less heat will flow down the case. That's my theory behind it. ;)

    Right or left ?

From what I can make out in this picture of yours, it appears the center of the flame in pointing at the shoulder-body junction??? It's recommended that it should be pointing to the neck-shoulder junction where the neck can take on the heat the fastest and the most grain structure change. If...

    .308 Winchester

Went out last week and fire formed 10 hybrid .308 cases with case volume of 56.3 grs H2O and loaded them with 41.7 grs IMR-4064 behind 190 SMK's using the same primers that I removed from them and seated the primers to the same depth as they were originally. Though this was only to fire form...

    Right or left ?

Yes, this can help relieve any concern about heat traveling down the body by putting a line of this from the neck to the web. But, 400°C/750°F still isn't going to do much of anything to the body unless it's at that temperature for something like 30 seconds. I doubt the body ever gets...

    Right or left ?

More details about your annealing process would help. . . like, how long in the flame; what part of the flame touching what part(s) of the case. . . ??? Because cases cool off so fast, quenching them really doesn't change anything and your results, in terms of changes in hardness, is no...

    Barrel wear Vs velocity/weight/energy

As mentioned, HEAT is the big factor for barrel life. That heat is a factor of the powder you use. how much of it you use, rate of fire and ambient temperature you're shooting in affects how fast the heat will build up. This is the reason I have little temperature strips on my barrels just...

    .308 - Sierra 169 SMK loads

The 177 SMK's performed nicely for me where I loaded them with 40.8 grs AR-Comp giving me ~2,650 fps with groups just under .5 MOA. I still like the 169's the best. ;) :giggle:

    .308 - Sierra 169 SMK loads

Gun: Ruger Precision Rifle Gen2 Barrel: 26" Krieger 10:1, contour: .900 muzzle Brass: Lapua Palma Powder: AR-Comp, 41.1 grs Primer: CCI-400 or 450's in Alpha brass MV: 2690 fps or 2704 fps with CCI-450 primers COAL: 2.974 SD's running 5 to 6 fps Group MOA's: .370 to .460

    6.5 Creedmoor

Are you using Alpha brass in you Grendel? If so, then yes. . . I'd expect #400 to have an issue about piercing. Alpha brass has slightly larger flash holes and according to what they mention on their website, that larger flash hole tends to lead to pierced primers on primer cups that are...

    6.5 Creedmoor

These days, I'd say it's because they're so much more available than LRP's. Other than that, the SRP brass can withstand more pressure due to there being more brass in the case head and this means the brass can last longer. In terms of performance, as mentioned, there can be a nice increase in...

    Powders (H4350, H4831sc & Rl26) & MV's for 16" 6.5 PRC W/130's-140's?

I like RL-26 best out of a 16" barrel as it'll all burn before leaving the muzzle, the other powder's (as good as they can be) don't. 60.0 grs of RL-26 pushing a Berger 130 AR Hybrid with a COAL of 2.955 gets a velocity at 2794 fps. You're results will likely vary, so run a pressure test in...

    Seating Depth Question 6.5cm

Likewise, I've experimented with my .308 where I found a good seating depth the produced really well for a long time not changing it for ~2,000 rounds fired. Of course, the throat eroded and the jump over that time increased substantially. I did this test after reading about several top notch...

What did you do in the reloading room today?

After going through the box of cases that I processed , I did find there to be the 4 different headstamps. That vast majority had the 24 and just 6 that had "277 Fury" stamped on them. Those without the "23" or "24" are much lighter at < 149 grs (those stamped with Fury also weighed in that...

What did you do in the reloading room today?

I did notice 2 different headstamps when I was selecting the 10 cases to fire form, but I haven't gone through the box of them to see if there are more than 2. Those that I fire formed had the headstamp of SIG 24 6.8mm (the 24 apparently being the year) and the others, which are much lighter...

What did you do in the reloading room today?

Finally got around to firing those 10 cartridge's I loaded with 41.7 grs of IMR-4064 behind some 190gr SMK's that's been just laying around for some time. This was simply to fire form them that I can measure their case volumes before I load the rest of them up. Case volume wasn't quite as much...

    sierrabullets.com Load Data

Yeah, I find my loads for 169 SMK are very close to that for my 168 SMK's. I've read some reloaders saying the load data for the 168 TMK is close to that for the 169 SMK . . .???

    Question on bullet seating.

Last year, to my surprise, I happened to see some discarded 6.5 cm Lapua brass that appeared to be just once fired (having what looked like factory sealant around the primer as an indicator), so I picked the 40 rounds laying there for a shooting buddy who reloads that round (I don't shoot the...

    Question on bullet seating.

Likewise, I've found PPU cases to produce quite well, even as a mix of lots. What I have of them is a collection from range brass that I picked up as I collected various brands of cases to compare when I first started precision reloading. I also collected a LOT of FC brass that also performed...

Too bad they haven't shown the data for their newest rounds (like the 169 and 177 SMK's). 😵‍💫
