    Range Report Ballistic Calculator accuracy??

This could turn into a can of worms, but I think you'll find that if your incorrect velocity got you good results, then something else was wrong- most likely the BC, atmospheric data, or even the line of sight angle. If you nail everything down, you should be dead on at 500 yards with a decent...

Range Report Calculating Ballistic Coefficients with JBM Ballistics?

The bottom line is that you can calculate them either with simple methods like JBM uses, or with more advanced engineering software. Neither is as accurate as *good* measurements, which have their own challenges and uncertainties. I'm not sure I believe this will always be the case, but I'm no...

    Rifle Scopes Scopes Slipping

I don't even own an in-lb torque wrench. To each his own.

    Rifle Scopes Scopes Slipping

If it doesn't break anything, it's not too tight. The specs for scope rings are pretty conservative if you ask me (probably to keep people from breaking stuff - that's what I'd say if I made scope rings). On hard kicking magnums, I don't see the harm in torquing them up a bit more if you know...

    Prone- Slung and Biopod

I find that if I don't shoot sling every now and then, my F class shooting gets sloppy. It's tough to learn to shoot properly shooting only F class because it's so "easy". Just point and shoot, right? All the errors are more subtle and harder to see. What looks to a novice like a good shot might...

Gunsmithing AR 15 Barrel Nut Torque

Keep in mind those torque values assume you'll be using mil spec moly grease on the threads.

    What reloading equipment to purchase

I don't see the need for a trickler and a Chargemaster. The CM will do manual trickling as well as automated.

    What reloading equipment to purchase

My take: Beginner's Guide to Reloading Equipment Since writing the above, I've picked up a Chargemaster and hornady magnum ultrasonic cleaner. Both are good, but neither is a miracle worker. The CM is a little slower that I would like it to be, and the ultrasonic requires a little more...

    Damn luck or what?

Not saying your story is bullshit (sorry, had to), but I think you'll find that with a factory rifle, that is pretty much the edge of it's capability. I wouldn't be surprised if you (or anyone, for that matter) couldn't do it consistently. If you can shoot well at short range, you can generally...

Gunsmithing A question on supply and demand

I've always wondered this. Because it seems like certain items have been backlogged for decades. High end stocks and barrels, mostly. I can understand if there is a large capital outlay on equipment required to increase production - businesses get crushed if they have underutilized capacity...

Range Report Which Published Berger BCs Are From Predictions Rather than Measurements?

Here's a tip - isolate the variables you want to test. You can't complain that point mass is bad because the drag data isn't good enough, and then test it in the velocity region where we are most certain about drag. Another tip - do some work with the software (write a solver) before you head to...

Range Report Which Published Berger BCs Are From Predictions Rather than Measurements?

The beauty of science is that it doesn't matter what anyone believes, the next step is the same either way - measure the biggest uncertainty and see what happens. In Lowlight's case, even with a very skilled shooter under some pretty specific conditions, the biggest uncertainty is still the wind...

Funny you mention that. I started working on an update to my code this weekend. I'll be sure to add all the new ones.

Range Report Which Published Berger BCs Are From Predictions Rather than Measurements?

Speaking of chronographs, I'll throw out a plug for Bryan's new book in an attempt to rebalance the universe. The chapter on chronographs is worth the price of the book all by itself.

Range Report Which Published Berger BCs Are From Predictions Rather than Measurements?

Out to 800 or so, it doesn't matter as much. I have always been able to get pretty damn close with minimal effort at that range. Where it gets dicey is when you get far enough out that the bullet drops down near the speed of sound. Even at longer ranges, we're talking about some relatively small...

Range Report Which Published Berger BCs Are From Predictions Rather than Measurements?

If you don't trust your chronograph, it really doesn't matter much. Before you can even get started on the level of gnat-assery in this thread, you must be very confident in the simple variables like velocity, range, atmospherics.

Range Report Which Published Berger BCs Are From Predictions Rather than Measurements?

I was under the impression that lot to lot variations for typical match bullets would allow for a couple percent variation in BC. I'm sure Bryan can correct that if it's wrong. That's a fairly big number when you get to discussing some of these small factors.

Range Report Which Published Berger BCs Are From Predictions Rather than Measurements?

Let it go, Michael. You're way, way in the weeds now. If your point is that data is imperfect, you win. I, for one, am eternally thankful to the work that the guys at Applied Ballistics/Berger have done, and it's good stuff.

Range Report Which Published Berger BCs Are From Predictions Rather than Measurements?

Well, you wouldn't. Only if the old function matched your bullets. But that's what's published, so that's what we use. It's not ideal. G7 is better. As are other functions. Best yet, full custom. As for gain twist, now your'e getting into the dependence of the drag function on other factors...
