F T/R Competition First custom F-T/R build, help with stock choice

Please let us know what you come up with. I think there is an opportunity for TR-specific stocks in the market. Very few are making dedicated stocks for htat purpose. Perhaps this will spark MasterClass to come up with something. They're almost there. Just need a few tweaks to lighten them up.

Rifle Scopes Steiner Optics Factory / The new T5Xi thread (-!!-Picture Heavy-!!-)

They should probably purge the scopes a couple extra times to get rid of the Greely stench.

F T/R Competition First custom F-T/R build, help with stock choice

I've got a Master Class high power prone. It is very high quality. However, watch the weight if you want to use the F class stock in T/R. It's designed to be used in Open class, and depending on what action/contour/stock hardware you want to go with, it can blow your weight budget. I spec'd one...

pros and cons of full length hand guard on AR

I like a long hand guard because it allows for more flexibility when shooting slug. The only downside, other than a little more weight, is that it makes it hard to grab the barrel when you need to install/remove a brake, etc. if you get too close to the muzzle. You have to take off the guard to...

    F T/R Competition Berger 215's

When you say vertical is a problem, is it just a matter of the extra recoil or is it because the bullets are on the heavy side of reasonable for a .308 or what?

    F T/R Competition Berger 215's

I decided to jump ship to the T/R side of F class, and so I'm looking for a little input. Anyone using the Berger 215's for T/R? Expected velocity out of a 32" barrel? Do you need to run stupid pressures to move these fast enough out of a .308? Small primer brass? Enquiring minds want to know...

Gunsmithing Which torque screwdriver to get

Don't get me wrong- there's nothing wrong with using one. They *are* going to be better than winging it. Just not as much as most folks think. In the end, the screws on a rifle are not going to effect accuracy (especially ring screws), so it's just not important. If I had one, I'd use it. But I...

Rifle Scopes Scope Clearance: Barely Enough Room for a $1 Bill?

Another thing that could help is to make sure the front ring is as far forward as it can go. The more of the objective that is hanging out, the more it will move.

    Load work up?

You have to shoot groups. The more the better. One round per load will tell you nothing. Depending on how lucky you are, it takes 50-100 rounds worth of 5 shot groups to come up with a load that you can be confident in. There is no shortcut, despite what you see written on the web about ladders...

F T/R Competition Build my F-T/R rifle & Loading System

Coating may actually increase heat dissipation due to possibly increased radiation. It's so thin that I doubt it insulates anything. You'd have to test it to find out, but I'd be surprised if it were a practically significant difference. I don't buy that heat is all that much of a problem anyhow...

    Gunsmithing Need a certified gunsmith

This I agree with. I won't say it can't be done without training because I know it has been successfully (In fact, I'd bet most of the common action in use today were originally designed by folks without modern training), but action design is something where a degree (or the equivalent...

    Gunsmithing Need a certified gunsmith

I have a mechanical engineering degree. Honestly, not much of it is applicable to gunsmithing, which is *theoretically* simple stuff. There's not much to analyze or quantify, which is what engineers do. I see people doing a lot of things I would consider "wrong" because they don't know any...

To lube or not to lube. That is the question.

Some people try to do this. Here's some evidence that you shouldn't:The Rifleman's Journal: Basics: Resizing - Case Dimension Changes

To lube or not to lube. That is the question.

If you don't full length size you will eventually get a stuck case. You do not need lube for neck sizing.

Rifle Scopes Scope Clearance: Barely Enough Room for a $1 Bill?

Yeah, that is not .003". But a dollar bill is. I'm just saying leave some clearance or risk the consequences of the scope hitting the barrel, whatever those may be. I don't think that's terribly controversial. I can't get a good sight picture on a high mag scope without a properly sized/adjusted...

Gunsmithing Which torque screwdriver to get

Nobody ever listens to me when I say this, but save your money. You don't need a torque wrench at all. They are not terribly precise instruments to begin with because they don't measure what you actually care about, which is the bolt stretch. So they give a false sense of precision. When it...

Rifle Scopes Scope Clearance: Barely Enough Room for a $1 Bill?

The bottom line is that if you run .003" of clearance, the scope will hit the barrel from time to time - quite possibly every shot. Up to you to decide if that's bad or not. As I said before, I leave a gap. To each his own.

Rifle Scopes Scope Clearance: Barely Enough Room for a $1 Bill?

Semantics. The point is that stuff moves. Scopes, mounts, barrels, stocks. They all move. Give it a little clearance.

Rifle Scopes Scope Clearance: Barely Enough Room for a $1 Bill?

It won't move much, but the scope will.

Rifle Scopes Scope Clearance: Barely Enough Room for a $1 Bill?

Somewhere on here someone posted some high speed photography of a scope flexing during firing. After watching that, I go with a minimum of 0.100" clearance.
