    Gunsmithing CNC Muzzle Threading

The tool after the threads is creating a blunt start/Higbee thread. The number of roughing passes is a result of safe compromise. I found that no matter how well you are holding the tapered barrel, you can push it back into the chuck with a tool nose radius and depth of cut normally used to...

    Gunsmithing CNC Muzzle Threading

Glad you liked it. Never know what’s going to come on in the Rubicon shop radio...

    Gunsmithing CNC Muzzle Threading

Just for fun. This was a customer spec’d 5/8-24 thread. Followed it up with a dry run for a video.

Gunsmithing Best way to drill large holes in steel

Seeing that done on a TL tool post makes me feel more confident spending the money on a 1.5” CoroDrill 880 for my turning center.

Gunsmithing Rethreading a 1/2x28 muzzle brake to 5/8x24?

As long as there’s enough meat over threaded area on the brake, and it’s reasonable to chuck up, absolutely.

    Gunsmithing Rigid reamer holders

I’ve chambered barrels just about every way imaginable, and then some. For just about everyone, a floating holder is going to be best. There’s just too much going on on a manual lathe to keep your reamer dead nuts aligned consistently. Sure, you can get it aligned, but then you change a tool...

Gunsmithing Proof barrel bored off center

I don’t think that was my video, but I do taper out of the OD slowly when doing a crown. This is an old video, so I can’t remember the exact number, but I probably tapered out of the radius to the OD around .200”. This small muzzle didn’t have much to work with, so the radius is probably only...

    Gunsmithing Dial test indicator

If I had to choose one indicator for barrel work, without a doubt it would be an Interapid 312B-15. Long reach point, tons of travel, .0005” resolution, big ass dial that’s easy to read and visually divide between the lines. I can’t remember what they go for price wise, probably a bit out of...

Gunsmithing Proof barrel bored off center

It’s of no concern. The only time I even worry about what the OD of the barrel is doing is when blending a muzzle brake/seamless thread protector, and that is after the threads were cut aligned with the bore. In other words, it’s normal and nothing to worry about.

    Cerakote color with proof barrel?

A 60/40 Burnt Bronze/Graphite Black mix is my favorite color besides straight Graphite Black.

Gunsmithing Need advice from Master Gunsmiths

If you are just doing it for yourself, it is a hobby. Some people spend years rebuilding old cars in their garage. Some people spend a day fitting a rifle barrel in their garage. If you are doing it as a hobby, that time spent is the enjoyment. Knowing you did it yourself is the reward, even...

Gunsmithing Need advice from Master Gunsmiths

Without having any numbers to back this, I’d bet money more bechrest matches are won with rifles chambered on manual machines than CNC. Not necessarily because manual machines are more accurate, they are easier to justify for most shops financially, therefore more are in use. At the same time...

Gunsmithing Do you fuss over headspace?

In spec is in spec. That is why we have gauges. If you have to pound the bolt open with factory ammo on a chamber that is in spec, the ammo is out of spec.

    Gunsmithing Muzzle runout

And I won’t argue which method is best, because I don’t think it can be qualified on target. Each builder needs to do the method they feel is best and works best for their set up. I have built many both ways and have settled on what I like best.

    Gunsmithing Muzzle runout

Looks like Edds answered it. You get the two points you choose to run true, which ever those two points may be, then machine the chamber to be in line with them.

    Gunsmithing Muzzle runout

But you absolutely can have the throat and muzzle dialed in. Many bencherst builders do this.
