Rifle Scopes SightMark Citadel 5-30x56 LR2 Riflescope SM13040LR2: a running review

Yesterday, I finally made it to the range. It's been quite a while, so the shooting is not first rate. The rifle is my factory Howa 1500 in 308 Winchester with an MDT LSS chassis, Ergo grip, Magpul MOE stock, and Tally 20 MOA rail for the scope. I believe the mounts are medium Weaver quick...

Rifle Scopes SightMark Citadel 5-30x56 LR2 Riflescope SM13040LR2: a running review

More like minimal fuzziness toward the edges of the view, where the focus sharpens toward the center. The eyebox is decent at max power. I found it fairly easy to center the pupil. It doesn't "snap" like some scopes I've used, like the Falcon I have myself. The Falcon has a narrow eyebox...

Advanced Marksmanship Please school me on QUICK wind reading (match skillz)

My apologies to Bryan Litz. The passage regarding the effect on gullies, valleys, etc. on bullet trajectory wasn't from the Wind Book. It's from a Palma match description starting on page 67 of "Applied Ballistics for Long-Range Shooting" by Bryan Litz. Terrain does some weird things to wind...

Rifle Scopes SightMark Citadel 5-30x56 LR2 Riflescope SM13040LR2: a running review

The glass looks very good. Pretty sharp edge to edge. Typical tunneling a bit at max zoom, but acceptable. I'll try to get a picture through the scope soon. I made it to the range today, so the full write-up is forthcoming shortly.

Advanced Marksmanship Please school me on QUICK wind reading (match skillz)

One thing I might add is something I got from the "Wind book for Rifle Shooters". Wind speed is different depending on height above the ground. Someone mentioned gullies and draws. I seem to remember the wind is going to be faster going across them since the height of the bullet trajectory is...

    Forster Micrometer Seating Die Issue

Just a thought... one problem I had with the Forster micrometer seating die happened when I wasn't properly adjusting the die to make sure the sliding Die Chamber was not compressed. After I grabbed the instructions and started over, my runout dropped considerably.

Range Report Hornady 147's coming apart...

FYI, do a DuckDuckGo search for "hornady ELD coming apart". More than just a few people commenting about this.

Range Report Hornady 147's coming apart...

For factory ammo, that would take a barrel twist of something like 1 in 4" if they're not defective. The only time I've ever heard of bullets coming apart is lightweight varmint bullets reloaded to high velocities out of a high twist barrel.

    Hexagonal Boron Nitride bullet coating

Excellent suggestion. The N95 works for me (in theory): 95 - Removes 95% of all particles that are at least 0.3 microns in diameter (https://www.envirosafetyproducts.com/resources/dust-masks-whats-the-difference.html) According to the label, the mask should block the 5 micron (even .5) micron...

    Hexagonal Boron Nitride bullet coating

One safety note about using HBN: As with all industrial fine particle powders, I strongly recommend using an N95 surgical mask and gloves when handling the powder, especially when opening the vibratory tumbler bowl, extracting the bullets from the media by hand, and polishing the excess powder...

    Hexagonal Boron Nitride bullet coating

Good point. If your optimum powder/load combination is compressed or near full capacity, you may not want those bullets coated. The HBN reduces the throat/bore friction considerably. In most cases, you will need to increase the load to compensate velocity. On the other hand, you might want...

    Hexagonal Boron Nitride bullet coating

I remember when I first starting hunting this stuff back in 2010-2011. There were a limited number of sources and most didn't specify the particle size. Now, they've got the stuff on Amazon. For reference, this is 1 ounce: This is the 11 1/2 ounces (including plastic bag) I have still, after...

    Hexagonal Boron Nitride bullet coating

I've been using hexagonal boron nitride coating on all my rifle bullets for almost seven years now. Softcock was right about the molecular structure, IF you buy the nano particle size. It does come in several different grades. I have a couple of mini turbo Lyman vibrator tubs that I filled...

Rifle Scopes SightMark Citadel 5-30x56 LR2 Riflescope SM13040LR2: a running review

Update: My 20 MOA rail came in, so I bolted that to my Howa 1500 and remounted the scope rings. I preferred to conduct testing with the 20 MOA rail due to the short turrets on this thing. If you figure that the total elevation range is 11 mil, reticle center on the turret would be 5.5 mil. With...

So over it. I need an ACCURATE Scale.

Just to mention an option, this battery powered digital scale is pretty amazing. The SHARPSHOOTER Digital Reloading Scale 20 g x 0.001 g by TruWeigh.com is designed specifically for reloading. I was really surprised when it came in a hard plastic case, well packed with the scale, accessories...

Rifle Scopes SightMark Citadel 5-30x56 LR2 Riflescope SM13040LR2: a running review

I just received one of the latest SightMark entries into the FFP tactical rifle scope arena, the Citadel 5-30x56. Over the next few weeks, I will be posting to this thread as a running review. I'm writing an early stub to give other shooters a chance to post any questions or tips before the...
