    you should be able to get by with a shop/machine/wood vise, something that will apply enough pressure to keep the barrel from spinning. the key is that you want to secure it on the shank which is only a few inches long, and not on the carbon.

    but the extra velocity from longer barrels helps on wind calls and unknown distances. the extra weight also helps stabilize the gun. if you're just shooting paper and steel, and don't need energy on animals, i'd consider going with a lighter-recoiling caliber, easier to spot hits and misses.
