    Gunsmithing Ackley Improving a #1

The best the gun has shot is .5" @ 100. It is usually .6"-.7". Impressive for a #1. Not looking for a whole bunch of velocity gain - just want the "cool" factor of the round. My 30-06 AI, 30-30 AI have been good rounds. I will get a 6.5-06 AI when I come across $$ for a barrel. Thanks for...

    Gunsmithing Mauser Turkish

The markings make it sound like a Small Ring ('93) Mauser. If the bolt does not have the 3rd locking lug in the rear, I would have reservations about shooting 8x57 ammo in it. A good number of the GEW guns were reworked by Arab Turkish Firearms and are stamped ATF on the front receiver ring...

    Gunsmithing Ackley Improving a #1

Finally got an item off my bucket list and picked up a Ruger #1 in 280. I'm thinking of making this an Ackley IMP and need help on the math. How do I know how much to set the barrel back to keep the quarter rib indexed?? Is there a formula for threads per inch?? Also, can I use the...

    Gunsmithing TIG'n Bolt Handles

I've had/have guns with both the Sako and M-16 style extractors. I like the M-16 style better. It is a solution for a non-problem but on both of mine I had to open up the bolt face to magnum. In doing that the OEM style extractor goes away. I guess the guy who opened up my boltfaces could...

    Gunsmithing Mauser Turkish

Reading again your OP it seems somebody may have made a shroud of aluminum for the barrel. The only reason I could think of this would be to make it look better than the mil "stepped" barrel. The shroud might be just to cover up the ugly stepped barrel. If so, I would guess it was done after...

    Gunsmithing Mauser Turkish

Is it a 93 or 98 Mauser?? 93 = 1.30" across the front receiver 98 = 1.43" O.D. on the front receiver Not 100% sure on the Turks, as they made at least 3 variations, but the "shroud" might be the rear sight collar. If so the collar is silver soldered on and will take a torch tho heat it up...

Rifle Scopes 20 or 30 MOA base

OK, I'll go w/ the 30 MOA base. It is a 264 WM w/ 29" Lilja barrel. Once I get the scope on, I'll chrony it to see where I'm at. I want to use 140's but might go w/ 130's. If I could find a 160 VLD type I would be real happy!!!

Rifle Scopes 20 or 30 MOA base

How much MOA in a base do I need? With a 200 yd zero I am 21 MOA down at 1000yds. If I get a 30 MOA base will I be able to zero at 200, or will I have to zero at 3 or 400? Currently I can only shoot to 1000yds, if I can find a spot to shoot longer, I'll try it. I don't know the total...

Gunsmithing Need a gunsmith to customize big bore revolver

Most any 'smith with a lathe and barrel vice can pull and cut/crown your barrel. Weigand or Mag-na-port for the porting.

    Tactial slings

It is an MS3 Quick Connect. Do I want to set this up to have the Quick Connect on the front or on the buttstock?? I'll look at the Blue Force for the LR-260, gotta get the carbines going first.

    Tactial slings

OK, so I bought the MagPul MS3. Being a bolt gun guy I have no idea what I need to attach this. It has a spring loaded clamp on one end and a round quick release on the other. What parts do I need to buy, for my AR, that this sling attaches to??

    Gunsmithing 700 LA build

If you go with a 700 action get an M-16 extracter installed. For a DGR I would go with a controlled round feed rifle. For the Rigby case I would go with a '17 Enfield action.

    Gunsmithing Rem take off barrels

Sporter weights are worth about $40-$60. Heavier barrels $60-$90. Savage barrels get a little more because of their ease of changing.

    Gunsmithing Machining...can it be self-taught?

I inherited an Atlas lathe and Bench Made mill a few years ago. Since then maybe $600 in tooling + reamers. I am still in the very novice dept. I learn by trial and error and have broke/made dull more than a few tools. After I spent 3 hours setting up, I go to a machinist's house and he...

Gunsmithing Why do savage owners love nuts?

+1 I have 3 and am looking for a 4th. All of them started out as something different than what they are now. Plus it helps with my repressed childhood love of Linclon Logs. I also have Contenders, Encores and Dan Wesson revolvers form the same reason.

Barker machine works - mia with my money

I had a similar situation with a company in MI (now out of business). After 4 months of no contact I contacted the ATF to find out if he was still in business. 3 days later the shop contacted me with a laundry list of excuses. I'm not saying that you should do this, but in the late '80's Al...

Caliber Choices - Comparison and Applications

I didn't see the 6.5 Grendel. In a bolt gun it will reach out like a Creedmor with longer barrel life and less recoil. It can be had in the lighter AR platform vs. the heavier LR/AR-10. I'd like to see a chart on what actions the larger/odder cartridges will fit in. Will a CheyTac fit in a...

    Which custom action

I am considering my first custom action rather than hot rodding a 98, 700 or 110 action. What are your thoughts? Stiller, GAP...?? I'd like a right hand bolt with a left port, repeater, maybe for a 6.5-06 AI or 280 AI.
