Why isn't straight pull more popular?

One thing this video made me think of is that I care about the bolt positions a lot more than the shape of the knob, cycle length, rotation, and a host of other factors. If I can come straight off the trigger onto the bolt, we're good. If I have to reach for it, as appears to be the case in...

Why isn't straight pull more popular?

I think there are a couple factors: 1. the speed differences between different bolt actions are GREATLY over stated... and not particularly relevant. 2. economics, R700 standard: cost, reliability/safety and aftermarket support matter. A lot of timed rifle shooting is GO/NOGO, there isn't much...

    Tac Ops Rifles

@RayDBonz - owing the obvious superiority of the Delta, of course. I am in no way biased...

    Remington 700 6.8 spc

I was floored by how fast he went from sincere goof to respectful compliance... usually doesn't work out that way, tip of the hat for that, at least.

Daniel Defense Delta 5 Pro - 6.5 Creedmoor for first PRS gun??

You would be well served to head over to the Precision Rifle Blog and do some reading. While somewhat dated in some instances, you might find the "What the Pros Use" series insightful. You'd be even better served to head to a match and take a course before buying anything. If you're serious...

Rifle Scopes Alpha Class Long Range Scope Review - TT, ZCO, Schmidt, March, Vortex

I wonder if I can get them to retro fit my 4.5-28? Though, honestly, I think the plan now is to swap my original onto my father/son/hunting rig, buy one of these new fangled ninja scopes for my Delta-51 and drive on.

35 Whelen, A great round being forgotten.

I'm generally not a copper guy, but I suppose I'd at least consider them in a medium bore. Worth consideration as I keep "low key" looking for a way to indulge my completely irrational desire for waaaaay more gun than I need for any game animal I've ever seen/hunted ;-).

35 Whelen, A great round being forgotten.

Oh... damn... might not be smart enough for this game... let me put the glue stick down and try again... For GP use, I'd want a 225 grain that comes in with a G1 around .425 and reliably sheds weight down to 1800 fps or lower. Not expands, mind you, but actually sheds weight... no more than...

35 Whelen, A great round being forgotten.

Well, let's start with Hornady... my choices are 200 grain FTX (which... meh?) or three flavors of Interlock. Now, I like Hornady, but I don't like the Interlock or the Interbond especially much. I wouldn't call them outright bad, but my preference is overwhelmingly for the SST if we're going...

35 Whelen, A great round being forgotten.

I've looked at .35 and even .375 bores on occasion... and just been really disappointed by the bullet selection. I realize it's a cycle... low demand, low R&D, low selection, low demand... but... le sigh...

Rifle Scopes Alpha Class Long Range Scope Review - TT, ZCO, Schmidt, March, Vortex

I pulled the review over to my Google Docs for future reference, definitely appreciate the work that went into it. I was just gonna start buying a family of March FX 4.5-28, but now I might need to work something else in there to keep them company ;-). I just need one "tank" and one "light"...

    New Sierra 169gr SMK (.30)

If we're talking 168 TMK, I'll simply throw out that Federal T308T runs 2625 fps at the muzzle from my 20" Delta-51 compared to 2605 fps for FGMM 168 SMK. Feels like one should be able to handload into that range without too much of an issue.

    Barnard SMS: issues and fixes.

That's a damn shame. Finely crafted actions made by folks who know what they're on about.

    American Rifle Co actions

Are we calling the old G2 the 1.2 now because it doesn't have the integral lug? I don't know that warrants a change, but I do like integral lugs... and flat bottoms, alas. I like the barbell bolt knob a lot. Generally, pretty feature rich... even if they're not glass smooth.

    Tac Ops Rifles

Just gonna put yourself out there with that math error? Forgot an inch on that initial adjustment ;-) I appreciate the "only need one shot to zero" nature of Tac Ops. I think I mentioned earlier that my Delta-51 was "true" to the point that simply mounting the optic was close enough to...

    TAC OPS / KMW Collaboration

I don't know this guy from Adam, but his performance requirement is 2 inches or better at 600 yds for 10 shots. Mathematically speaking, his 3 shot groups should average less than 1 inch... which is like 1/7 MOA. There's also an interesting discussion of stats and relevance, etc. Plain link...

    Tac Ops Rifles

Krieger IS a commercial option. Were you referring to contour and reamer specs?

    XM length actions

Depressingly, there are still folks out there that consider 3.4" a "long" action (looking at you Winchester). Other than mags, I really like the XM/Mauser length for a variety of cartridges. Anything on the x55 case, the .284, SAUM/WSM, even the venerable .308 family once you start seating...

Anerican Rifle Company Black Friday sale

$1250 for a barreled action makes me want to buy one on principle alone. If I'd had foresight, I could have sold my barreled action, bought this one, and pocketed the difference ;-). Instead, I suppose I'll settle from some rings.

    Low Velocities After New Barrel

Huh... wouldn't have thought Hornady would be handicapping their own cartridge. Seems odd for the same folks that load Superformance and squeeze a good 100 fps more out of 168 grain .308 as compared to Federal (who, in my experience, is on the light side).
