    Budget build for LR hunting

    "Budget" would be a stock Tikka, not that there's anything wrong or lacking in that. Tikka action, Proof carbon prefit barrel, pure precision altitude stock, is a pretty easy 'build.' No fussing with bedding, trigger, mag system, etc. In the middle of my 4th one.

    could you just run g17 mags, a little heavier and more real estate to grab? personally never had an issue with glock mags but did have a few issues with magpul. if you really want to supersize, had great results with the arredondo +5's but sounds like you want to keep them low profile.

    that's the right answer (gun and caliber), worked for me a few years back when i got a small bull and large cow. i will say though the first shot on the cow, 200yds, was a perfect hit but didn't seem to affect her. she and her buddy ran some 25-50yds. i couldn't even tell which one i hit but...

    uspsa has a 'limited' division where .40 2011s (eg sti edge, sti eagle and custom varieties) were pretty dominant. a lot of those shooters are flocking to 9mm carry optics and limited optics divisions and i've seen a fair amount of nice .40s for sale in your price range.
