Precision Rifle Gear 2023 BigJimFish Reviw/Article blog: Arken, HiLux, Bushnell, Primary Arms, Optisan, nVisti, Sightron, Levels

Looks like a great option in the sub 1k line up. There’s a couple reviews out there that shows glass is holding its own against the ep5, I have no doubts the tracking should be good given athlons QC standards and warranty.

How much case web thinning is too much?

Unless you jam the bullets on the first firing, you’ll get an initial stretch. Even jamming the bullet will allow a slight stretch. It could reduce thickness too .003 or even more, depends on brass brand and the size of the new brass compared your chamber and how hot the load is. It most of the...

Case Prep: What are you using?

You don’t need anything fancy, trim your cases with a lathe trimmer in the color of your choice.. I do recommend annealing and deburring flash holes. Cleaning necks and primer pockets is a waste of time, in fact cleaning necks squeaky clean can hinder precision results.

    Savage Kaboom at Local Range

I agree, I noticed it later after zooming in.

    Scratched chamber

I had a factory rifle that scratched the cases so bad that they stuck in the chamber and was hard to extract, about 10 minutes to set up a wooden dowel with 4 or 600 grit (can’t remember) Emory cloth and 2 minutes with it chucked in my drill and the problem was gone.

    .308 Win - Setting setback

In my early years of going down the precision rabbit hole, I used a Lee collet with a Redding body die, no worries of expander stretch. Worked well. Now I use bushing dies and mandrels.

whats the deal with arken optics?

Relax! Arkens are great for the money. One thing they did for the consumer is make the other companies take notice and update their lines to compete with them. So, we get great choices from all the major brands in the under 1000$ market.

There is such a thing as too low

I can get behind a scope much better prone when it’s on the higher side. 2” is about perfect.

    Savage Kaboom at Local Range

It’s not that I’m wanna bash savage, I actually love my 112. But the axis is just crude, it doesn’t feed well, the bolt binds. It’s a sloppy mess. I’m not sure why savage wouldn’t refine it to at least the model 10 standards.

    Savage Kaboom at Local Range

It was a savage axis so he was probably going to throw it away after the range session anyway.

    Savage Kaboom at Local Range

After taking a closer look at the ammo box, it appears there’s factory and reloads in the box. Definitely can’t rule out wrong powder.

    Savage Kaboom at Local Range

The last savage I messed with, every single screw was loose. It was in a MDT chassis it came from the factory in it, and every single screw on that chassis was loose also, even the little panel screws. I wonder how many scopes get sent back because of loose base screws.

    Savage Kaboom at Local Range

I’m going to guess a squib, just because he likely loaded those 50 cartridges at the same time and it wouldn’t have made it that far if pistol powder was in them.

    Tuner Brakes

    I understand that completely.

    Tuner Brakes

If groups were a little better, what warranted to remove it. Does it look bad? Too heavy?. I’m just curious.

    Scope upgrade ,maybe?

For someone who owned both of the scopes you’re referring to, I can tell you the Arken is leaps and bounds ahead of the SWFA. Like it’s embarrassing. Saying swfa has better glass is a joke. As far as reliability and tracking it isn’t any better than Arken. I sent three swfa back for parallax...
