    Gunsmithing Threading and chambering

Again, the reamer absolutely can be used as a center. And in reality, although technically not always correct, it is pretty much a given that "working between centers" means working over the bed.

1:8" twist in a .308 Win. short barreled rifle - will it work?

I think many missed the first line in the OP "I want to buy a hunting rifle in .308 Winchester which will be shot both, supressed and unsupressed." He is not looking for the ultimate F-Class or BR rifle. It is an off the shelf hunting rifle to be used suppressed and unsuppressed. An 1:8 twist...

    Gunsmithing Threading and chambering

^ Pretty much what he said. I doubt any shooter could get behind several identically built rifles other than chambering method used, and pick out which was which by looking at the target. Bores on premium rifle barrels are far straighter than the internet would lead one to believe. Many...

    Gunsmithing Threading and chambering

Are you talking about the tapered caliber specific rods, or the long rod held in a chuck at one end and a bushing in the bore at the other? I won't go into the method I currently use since it is machine specific, and honestly, not very practical for most. I do recommend people be cautions about...

But you can ream a chamber with no external support at the breech end.

    Gunsmithing Threading and chambering

I don't personally use that method, but I don't really see any faults with it (I may have argued otherwise years ago, but I've gained much experience since then).

    Gunsmithing Threading and chambering

I think we all know what we mean by "between centers". One end either in a center and driven by a dog or in a chuck and the other end outside the headstock.

What are the faults with it?

    Gunsmithing Threading and chambering

To do it "between centers" without a floating reamer holder, you hold the reamer rigid and float the barrel instead. Relieve the steady rest a bit so the barrel can do what it needs to do, but is close enough to catch it when you pull out the reamer.

I don't personally do it this way, but plenty of people do, and do so successfully.

    The reamer IS the center.

    Gunsmithing Threading and chambering

Pro tip. Many people are probably bending barrels when working between spiders to try to get a "straight section" of bore for the chamber. A relatively small diameter bar being jacked around between two points about 20" apart is a recipe for a false sense of security. Wonder if anyone has gone...

    Gunsmithing Threading and chambering

The reamer can act as a center. Some people actually use this method and have the barrel floating in the steady rest.

    Help removing Muzzle Brake

If you got a partial turn, then it won't turn more, it's probably galled now and will need to be cut off.

    Help needed on Proof barrel

The only one that did work to that barrel before you got it was PROOF. There is nothing wrong with it. That section is meant to be removed by the builder.

    Help needed on Proof barrel

The "skinny part" is NOT meant to be threaded for a brake or muzzle device, it is to be removed by the builder, period.

    Barrel threading issue

Did your gunsmith fit the barrel to the action or to a spec? Neither are wrong as long as you know the end use/expectation of the customer. If it was fit to the old action, the new action may well be, and probably is in spec. The barrel may need to have the threads chased. Who’s responsibility...

    Weapon Safes

There's a difference between Residential Security Containers and a safe. RSCs my stop a smash and grab thief, but they'll never stop someone that knows what they are after in advance. I watched some tweakers attack a TL-30 safe out in a field near here for a couple days with a 14" demo saw. I am...
