Gunsmithing Options for a CNC machine

While I agree with most of that, a manual machine isn't always the best for prototyping. Even the most basic part with just a couple radii will be faster to hand program, setup and machine with CNC. The bottom line is the OP needs to know what parts he plans on making. From his follow up...

Gunsmithing Did my machinist wreck my barrel?

Which OEM torques 5/8-24 muzzle threads over 100 ftlbs? It’s not a lug nut. Will 100 ftlbs do it, I’m not sure, but you absolutely can constrict a bore by over torquing a muzzle device. is that the problem here? I doubt it. I also doubt the threads or machining setup is causing the issue. 4 MOA...

Gunsmithing Options for a CNC machine

That's a pretty broad question without stating your current and planned future needs.

    Gunsmithing barreling timing

What if the bore follows more of a M shaped path? Or a N? Not a V? Several people have turned a barrel parallel between centers, scribed a line down it, parted it every inch and then measured the wall thickness in relation to the scribed line of each of the pieces. Obviously this is destructive...

    Gunsmithing barreling timing

Does timing the muzzle runout at TDC guarantee that the attitude of the bore is in an upward direction? One would have to assume the bore makes a continuous and consistent single plane arc for this to be true. Personally, I feel bores are far straighter than the internet would lead you to...

Gunsmithing Barrel Fluting vs Barrel Stiffness

Fluting removes mass. A fluted barrel will heat up faster than a non-fluted barrel of equal profile. Using heat dissipation as a selling point for fluting a bolt action rifle barrel is a falsehood. So no, fluted barrels do not “run cooler”.

I just make counterbores .710" diameter to make sure nothing ever touches.

    Gunsmithing Out-of-round M700 bolthead...

Are you talking about the diameter of the bolt nose that goes into the barrel counterbore? That dimension is not a critical dimension and I wouldn’t worry about it, as long as it’s not so large in any dimension that it contacts the counterbore. I’d leave it alone.

Gunsmithing Expert opinion wanted on New barrel freebore (pic)

I've seen several barrels lately by a manufacture (that I won't mention) that look similar to this. I will still see rifling in the freebore as if the grooves were cut too deep, or see some undercut at the toe of the lands still showing in the freebore. It may even look eccentric in a bore...

Gunsmithing Expert opinion wanted on New barrel freebore (pic)

You can see that on an indicator then see something completely different with a borescope. DTIs have error, especially long stems being side loaded. Then you have the diameter of the ball point that can ride over features in the bore, that can easily be seen with a scope.

    Gunsmithing Surgeon extractor problem?

On a magnum bolt, there’s probably a M16 style extractor that on Surgeon actions, will usually go outside of a typical .710” counterbore diameter when it snaps over the rim. On that one, I’d bet it was a gunsmith error. The OP’s with the Remington extractor could possibly be a manufacturing...

    Gunsmithing Chamber flush system

    1. The OP wants it. 2. One must spend thousands of dollars to get set up to chamber their own barrels. Why stop short to save a couple/few hundred bucks and couple hours of time to spend far more time on each chamber job. 3. Why risk a chip gettin spun between the reamer and chamber? 4. If the...

Gunsmithing Armorer's wrench? Removing surefire brake

Are you sure it wasn’t installed with rocksett? If it was, heat is the wrong approach. Soak it in water over night or longer, then try removing it again. BTW, Surfire brakes come with a little packet of Rocksett, so it’s very possible it was used. That said, the brakes do have a wrench flat...

    Gunsmithing Tight chamber?

My guess is they are not trying to do anything other than be within the allowed spec. I doubt many are standing at their machine saying “I think I’ll make this one go +.0045””
