    Maggie’s What's Your View II

Engineers. A few years back the CEO of Toyota was asked about the factory of the future. He said the production line would only have a single engineer and a dog. When asked he explained the engineer was there to feed the dog and the dog was there to keep the engineer away from the production...

Worth it to run heavy 223 in 16" barrel?

If you roll your own something along the lines of the 65 gr Sierra Gameking, 60 gr Nosler Partition or Hornady GMX might be good choices for hogs as they expand well without usually blowing up. Out to 300 yards shouldn't be a problem. More velocity too which makes up somewhat for the lower BC.

    Cryo Barrel?

Cryo worked best with factory barrels which are not stress relived during manufacture. Nowdays most top barrel makers stress relieve as part of the process which pretty much negates the need for cryo.

I want to build a 300 Norma Mag on this action...........

You want to use a receiver with less safety margin to save a few bucks have at it. Keep in mind Stiller does not sell such an action, their .338 Tac action is larger diameter and has a larger bolt. for safety.

    Novice here...

First question to ask is what you intend to do. Benchrest absolutely requires that you handload otherwise you will never be competitive. That is short range, long range and anything in between. Pretty much the same for F/TR, F Open, Palma and most formal known range competitions. Tactical...

Noticed a nick in my Remington 700 5R rifling

I've got one 700 where the chamber is a little off line with the bore and the lands look a little mashed, that is not constant width down the barrel in one spot. And yet with handloads the damn thing is a hammer.

    I want one

"Future of Travel". Last time I heard that it ended up being the Segway. A hydrogen fuel cell generates electricity. If it generates a significant amount of power it is large, cumbersome, heavy and generate a tremendous amount of heat. Hydrogen as fuel for either internal combustion, a turbo...

    Iran Invasion time?

If Trump and Bolton want Iran invaded they should invade it their fucking selves. Just what the country would need, stuck in another shithole for decades wasting blood and treasure.

What's Your Favorite Brass and Why

For blasting ammo, pretty much any brass will shoot well with culling, prep and a good load. Do sort by head stamp. I primarily use Winchester and Lake City for hunting/varmint rifles. Shooting 600 yards and out for group or score requires eliminating or minimizing every possible variable...

    Left-hand twist and barrel torque

Equal and opposite reaction. If you are accelerating and forcing the bullet to spin at 180,000 rpm or so, the same amount of force is imparted in the opposite direction to the barrel/rifle. Not too noticeable in a .223 or .308, but definitely noticeable with my .338 or .416. Open the hood to...

    223 bolt gun questions

You are going to need a faster twist barrel to shoot the 77 or 80 grain bullets to 600. You'll need at a minimum a 1-8" twist barrel. If you want to try the 90 grain bullets that might work with a 1-7" or might take a 1-6.5". That may limit your factory options. Check the makers web sites.

    Remington's Long Throats

Everyone knows Remington has had long throats for years. No big deal. If the rifle shoots OK just shoot it until the barrel needs to be replaced. If it doesn't shoot replace the barrel now. There you go, a binary go-no go solution set.

    Rifle build questions

The 6mm BR would be the ticket then. An extremely accurate cartridge, high quality brass and bullets, plenty of excellent barrel makers. For the price I've had good luck with Stiller actions, basically a 700 SA footprint. Plenty of other 700 clones too. Some are tighter tolerance for accuracy...

Rifle Scopes Tenebraex Flip Covers, ARDs, Etc. --Tenebraex, EuroOptic Excellent CS!

One thing which I find annoying is that no one I've been able to find makes flip up scope covers for Nighforce BR 12-42s. At least not since Butler Creek got bought out and the 57A front is no longer made. Yeah, piss me of Bushnell. Tried calling Tenebreax but no one was home so I shot them an...

Are Hollywoods hottest chicks getting uglier in the aggregate? (on average for you hillbillies))

That's six pack Budweiser ugly, not the beer, the horses. It would take six Clydesdales to pull one of those on to my face

How important is rifle balance point?

Depends. I shoot F/TR style which means a bipod. I run a long heavy barrel and that puts the weight a bit forward and run the bipod (the rifles have rails) nearly all the way forward which puts more weight back on the rear bag. On the other hand for a field rifle a balance point at or just in...

    Rifle build questions

To be honest, I'm not all that fond of Remington. Mainly because of poor machine work and they are not the bargain 700s either, a VS-SF, VS-Sendero and a 700P. They shoot well with handloads but for the money I would expect better fit and finish. Yeah, they can be cleaned up by a good smith but...

Just got a new NSS Criterion barrel.

Nobody - he got towards being a little infamous for some of the stuff he pulled. Probably a good thing he lived in Alaska, couldn't imagine him in a crowd.
