    1896 Swedish Mauser question

@Stephen Bachiler You hereby gain some of the benefit from me being corrected over the years, by some very good gunsmiths and highly competent shooters. Any person who does not pass on what they have discovered via trial, error and asking questions; should pick up a dictionary and seek the...

    1896 Swedish Mauser question

The throat does not have rifling. The tapered progression into the rifling is called the leade. Leade erosion is much more of an issue with boat-tail projectiles, especially short-shank target bullets. Use of round-nose bullets is a standard method for extending the use of a rifle barrel with...

    not snipery but vintage

The title was still available from Stackpole in the early 2010s, if I recall correctly. Should be plenty available. Sometimes best to contact secondhand bookshops with a list of desired titles. I would really like to acquire Hatcher’s two titles on firearm forensics and perhaps Nonte’s title...

    not snipery but vintage

Looks good. If you read Hatcher's Notebook you will see that the military incidents tend to involve WW1 ammunition produced by new manufacturers. Hatcher also mentions, if I recall correctly, that some receivers will be outside the official number range because they were only numbered as rifles...

    No rimfire for SHTF

It is worth remembering that the old Deringer pistols (carried in waistcoat pockets) were scary because any bullet wound was scary, particularly if fabric was carried into the wound. If/when SHTF happens, readily accessible supplies of antibiotics (including penicillin alternatives for some...

    Farm Shoot 2023

I remember an AWQ at Somerville Range, Trentham Military Camp where the fog was so heavy that the first shooting detail was out of sight before they reached the 300m mound. They had to wait for the fog to clear before they could sight in at the 100m mound. It was reminiscent of WW1 Western Front...

    M1917 Rifle

28" barrels are used on 7.62x51 target rifles, in order to achieve acceptable velocities at 1,000 yards whereas a 24" barreled. 30-06 can, in the right hands, hit targets out to 1,200 yards. I have no doubt that there are numerous P14s and M17s that have been converted to single shot and fitted...

Gun show find, never seen such a thing

1920s production. Good article in Gun Digest years back. Will look it up after work and post reference in this thread.

    Considering building a snipery Chauchat

Yeah, too many lazy arseholes fail to note that Melvin Johnson was part of the Armalite team, bringing his bolt locking arrangement and straight line buffer spring philosophy to the party.

    Considering building a snipery Chauchat

Just like the sh**heads who took the Hispano Suiza 20mm cannon technical package from the British and decided to cut the chambers too short (so that the gun would not work). That is why the Thunderbolt and Corsair, etc were kitted out with .50 cal Brownings; instead of their intended gun...

Nice piece of kit. Thank you for sharing. I have a feeling that the Remington famously used in the Bonnie and Clyde ambush was chambered in either .32 Remington or .35 Remington. It is also my understanding that it was a law enforcement model with detachable 10 round magazine.

Wouldn’t that be a bit like dropping a Trabant body onto a Ginza street racer🙂?

    Pre war 70 22 hornet

Genuine .22 Hornet rifling OR have you gone for the larger .220 Swift type of rifling, to increase your bullet options? Either way, very nice kit for varmint shooting.

    Pre war 70 22 hornet

The .22 Hornet versions are very nice and … if you intend to shoot from one place, as opposed to wandering around several acres, they are much lighter (and better balanced) than a heavy barrelled varmint rifle.
