PRS Talk To Clarify My Earlier Statements - Death to Precision Rifle the Sequel

I started shooting as a hobby 5 years ago when I retired. Pissed away money on gear before deciding I like to shoot Ftr and long range prone. Age has a way of evolving your perspective to examine the heritage, altruism, and other esoteric aspects of everything. If I was younger and more fit I...

Rifle Scopes Over 40yrs old + Lasik + Scope shooting

I was in my 50's when I had lasik; had to wait a number of years to allow the procedure to advance due to a bit of astigmatism. Try reading through the distance part of your bifocal lens, and that is about how your reading vision will become following lasik. Yes I wear cheater glasses if the...

A few questions about the 223?

Shooting the 75Amax from a 22in 8 twist I have consistent vertical performance at 1000yd, with similar drops as my 6.5x47. No problems with stability at 500ft elevation, no mag issues, just great shooting. If only the wind.........

    223 version of the RPR

That 20in barrel is a bit out of place, limiting the capability of the high bc bullets that the 7 twist could throw. Pushing remaining supersonic at 1000yd at my altitude.

    OCW - chrono?

My experience, if you shoot at 200yd the results will be more clear. Many like 100yd and others who a fixed distance (like 1000yd BR) like to shoot at the competition distance.

    OCW - chrono?

To move beyond being a theory, proof is required. I know Dan pretty well, and he worked somewhat with Chris Long who developed the Optimum Barrel Time concept to address the associated harmonics which is the driving force behind WHY something like OBT and ladder testing work. Many do not accept...

    OCW - chrono?

I hear you Spife. When I first started shooting a number of years ago I was visiting master gun smith Dave Tooley and asking about how he developed loads for his new competition rifles. His advise was load a couple of "known" decent loads and if the bullet didn't shoot well move on to another...

    OCW - chrono?

Spife I have not shot 8208, but in all the other powders I've assessed the good nodes were at much higher velocity.

    Chrono and targets don't agree.

Rifle Scopes What do you want in a scope?? (Think outside the box!)

Sounds like some want a portable video game. I really would like to only see minimal mirage at high mag when aiming on the small Fclass x ring.

Caliber selection based on barrel longevity?

I shoot my 223 more than all the others combined. Cheap, accurate, fun. Shoots well to 1100yd, and really makes you focus on the wind. Makes my 6.5 seem like cheating.

    Electronic Scale

Its difficult to beat a tuned balance beam for the cost. Detects one kernel of powder, immediate response to trickling, accurate, no drift. I find the Chargemaster is surprisingly accurate if you watch the final trickling to insure nothing unusual happens which the 0.1gr display does not detect.

Rifle Scopes Input wanted on boxtest (tall target) results

So what is the dispersion if you shoot 10 shots on a dot drill? That is a reflection of the inherent variability of the system, including equipment and shooter, and unless the scope changes exceed this variability then you can't infer a scope issue.

    ocw test

Assuming you shot at 100yd, I would move out to 200yd. You will see much more pronounced differences due to load changes vs the shooter induced error. Wind is not so influential at 200, and mirage also plays minimal role. For expediency I was forced to shoot 100 a couple of times and always find...

    OCW - chrono?

Load development is an interesting combination of art and science, with a number of often debatable theories concerning methods and reasons (obt, ocw, ladder, harmonics, etc). In the end the target tells the story and if its good, whatever method works is fine. My latest load development was...

    OCW - chrono?

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. If it matches the target node then its a nice collaborating factor.

    Rifle Scopes what's your zero?

It depends. On my Ftr rifle it is zeroed at 300 yards because that is the primary distance for local matches, and only a minor tweak is needed as conditions change. For "tactical" shooting involving a multitude of distances I use 100yds because a wide variation in ambient conditions and even...

    OCW - chrono?

Sheldon the inherent SD affects the variability of the average as well, such that with fewer samples the average is also more variable. This variability is given as standard deviation of the average, SD(Avg) = SD(Individuals) / Square Root(n). For example if the SD for the...

    OCW - chrono?

I use large rubber bands to attach my chrono to a 2x6 board that I lay in front. Even given a good sd, looking for a chrono node is unreliable unless a decent number of shots is taken.
