Hunting & Fishing Is the Rem 700 R5 going to be terrible for hunting?

P.S. you're gonna get different answers depending on where you post this. Guys on this forum seem to generally be more fond of heavy rifles and heavy barrels. Post elsewhere and you'll have ppl telling you that there's absolutely no reason to ever hunt with a rifle that weighs more than 6 or 7...

Hunting & Fishing Is the Rem 700 R5 going to be terrible for hunting?

it's doable, but my guess is that you'll get tired of it. everything is a trade off. My 700P is the most accurate rifle I own, but it rarely gets carried to the deer woods due to length and weight. When it comes down to actual decision time, I almost always reach for a more portable rifle...

Going with .270, LETS TALK BARRELS

Not sure if there are any .277 bullets out there that can take advantage of anything quicker than a 1-10" twist.

how to "tame" the recoil on a 300 win mag?

This one is an aftermarket model I had installed, definitely not anything from the Savage factory. The rifle is the 110 with 24" barrel that comes with the HS Precision stock and no brake.

how to "tame" the recoil on a 300 win mag?

some brakes are louder than others too. My Savage 110 in .300 win mag has a "mild" (my word) brake with only forward holes (nothing on the sides). It doesn't reduce recoil to the extent of louder designs, but still claims 20-30% recoil reduction. Couple that with a 10lb plus gun, and .300 mag...

    .250 savage

the .250-3000 savage is near bout my favorite centerfire cartridge. I have never considered it to be a long range cartridge, however. 1st, there really isn't much in the way of high-BC bullets in .257 diameter. 2nd, the case capacity really isn't there to drive heavy .25's. I shoot 87 and...

Match ammo for hunting? Let the debate begin

I honestly don't shoot unless I know that I can do exactly this. to the OP, that's some impressive shooting. I always think these arguments that dead critters aren't really dead enough are interesting.

Match ammo for hunting? Let the debate begin

my rimfire hunting ammo is either Wolf MT or CCI SV's. never had a problem killin critters with either one this was Wolf MT ... out past 50 yds, no less:

What ammo. should I be running in my Savage 110-ba .300 win. mag?

it's very expensive to do any amount of shooting with a .300 win mag without handloading. Hell, it's expensive even if you do handload. That said, if you want accurate factory ammo to try in that Savage, just get Federal Gold Medal Match with the 190 SMK.

    24" or 26" barrel

buy the threaded one if you want to attach a can or a brake, non-threaded 26" one if you want to shoot as-is. there will not be an accuracy difference between those lengths, and the velocity difference will not be great. as far as handling goes, the 5r isn't ideal for carrying great distances...

    Winchester Stealth returns in 2013

bringing this thread back from the dead. Bud's shows these in stock now in .308 flavor. I would be surprised if they are not current production. no info on ROT, but looks like 26" heavy barrel and B&C stock. looks like it will be mucho nose-heavy. I bet it's a shooter, though

    Remington 700P question

The only problems I've had with my 700P are 1. magazine/feed ramp are very rough and will scar the crap outta your bullets and brass until you sandpaper things. I just made up a couple of donor rounds and cycled them through over and over until it smoothed up a little bit. 2. it has a 26"...

Info request: Out of the box accuracy - CZ455 vs Savage Mk II

hey now, my MkII will shoot a one hole group at 50 yds! I shot a 50 rnd box of ammo (CCI SV) through it one day at the same target spot sticky. Got one ragged hole .... about 2" around, maybe a little less. I've shot much tinier groups with it at 50, but really with a factory rifle shooting...

    Disappointed at range today

bring a .22 bolt gun. when the centerfire has you strained, switch to the rimfire. I don't think I've ever had a "bad" day at the range, even when I'm shooting poorly. but a .22 can definitely make the best of an otherwise non-ideal outing

    Savage 10 Predator .260

there is a pretty big difference between the LRP and the Predator MAX-1. The LRP has a heavy barrel, 1" I believe with little or no taper. It has the very light target accutrigger. It is made for sitting on the bench and target shooting, not hunting. it is a pretty heavy piece. the predator...
